About me

I’m in my early 50's, married with 3 beautiful children. Currently 9, 15 & 17. I work part time (paid) and part time for my self employed husband (unpaid). I love make up and am a sucker for new products but being on a tight budget means I don’t get to indulge in the more expensive brands. I have been kept busy with my family so beauty routines and techniques have taken a back seat for the last 10 years. I love to read about new tips that will save me time (and money)! I find reading other BHers reviews informative and helpful. I like to look at the forum and read other people’s comments but will not always comment myself. I have blue eyes, so so skin, (a bit dull with breakouts - for g-sake I’m over 40 the pimples should have stopped by now). The best my skin has ever looked was when I was pregnant. Why can’t one of the cosmetic companies replicate that and put it in a bottle? My hair is curly/wavy dark brown and knots easily. I am of Italian background and have the dark eye area.

I've almost finished the L'Oreal True Match Nude Plumping Tinted Serum in the colour 2-3 Light.  I think its a good colour match for my skin.  For me, its light coverage which can be built up a little.  This is a good foundation for when I have good, blemish free skin, but it doesnt have much coverage for when I need to camouflage healing pimples.  I tend to use it mostly on Sundays and other non working days.  I've found that the eye dropper doesn't reach all the way down to the bottom which is making it difficult to get the rest of it out so I've been using a mini spatula type tool to get the foundation out.  Its a good light makeup and I can recommend it for those wanting a light natural look.

I've been using the Natio Glow Multi-Action Exfoliating Concentrate for awhile.  One 30ml bottle has lasted me over four months as I've only been using it alternate nights - alternating with my retinol.  Its a clear serum type liquid which is dispensed with an eye dropper.  It absorbs quickly with no sticky residue and my moisturiser applied with no problems.  My skin has been looking clearer and I have had no irritations or breakouts.  My skin is usually fairly blotchy with redness and old pimple marks.  I feel this serum, in conjunction with my retinol has helped to fade those marks.  The Natio Glow Multi- Action Exfoliating Concentrate is a good reliable, gentle product and I'd be happy to use it again.

I've had the Revlon Colorstay Exactify Liquid Liner in black for a while.  I can't remember where I got it from but I'm guessing its from a Priceline Goody bag.   Its a pot type eyeliner, unscrew the wand and at the end of it is a little wheel type thing (yes it does turn - I went crosseyed checking lol) which when dipped in, is coated in the liquid.  You may need to redip to apply on the second eyelid. I use it every so often, then forget about it and then come back to it, mainly because I hate wastage and forget how I feel about it.  It is a waterproof eyeliner but it does tend to bleed a little into the wrinkles at my inner eye, for this reason, I start my line a little further along than I normally would. I like to use this eyeliner to do very thin lines, but because I have shaky hands, if I accidentally go too wide then trying to "colour in" gives messy looking results.  Removal is fairly easy with my rinse off makeup remover.  Because its not an "all rounder (as said above - only good for thin lines and does bleed) I wouldn't purchase it and probably wouldn't recommend it to a friend, so wont recommend it here either.

I was recently gifted a discovery bag by Beautyheaven and in there was the Glam by Manicare Pre-Glued Cluster Lashes in Lizzie style.  The box has three sets (three clusters per set).  The first thing I need to say is the instructions on the box and information on the box are NOT very helpful.  On the back it says to visit Facebook for tips and advice but I couldn't find anything specific to these particular cluster lashes.  I wasted about 15 to 20 minutes googling to try and find more helpful information but didn't really get anywhere.  It doesn't state on the box whether they are reusable and if yes, how many times can you reuse them.  Can you use them individually or are they better to use as a full set ie three clusters per eye? Nope, the answers, tips and advice weren't anywhere I could find. As these lashes are meant to go UNDER your own lashes, I did find it a little worrying and also angles were an important factor. I do like the idea of pre-glued, it takes the guessing game out of how long to wait after applying glue before its tacky.  The pro's and cons of cluster lashes as opposed to strip lashes - cons:  They are a little fiddlier.  As they’re smaller, If you’re wearing black and drop one of these things it could take you ages to find.  They were a pain to put back in the box.  pros:  I always have problems with sticking my corners down with strip lashes but with clusters, you can take a little longer with each piece without wondering whether the glue has lost its tackiness.  In a way they are easier to apply than strip lashes and placement is easier.  When I did reuse them, their stickiness was less effective so I did add a little glue.  They are light to wear but I was very conscious of them to start with.  Although by the end of the day, I was looking forward to getting them off maybe because the band on these lashes are a little thicker than some I've used and because they're placed under the lashes, not above as they are usually. I love false lashes, I'm just not very good at applying them.  But I do like the idea of clusters lashes and pre-glued lashes, I actually do think they are a little easier to apply.

I'm always excited to trial things from Beautyheaven so I was thrilled to be gifted a discovery bag recently.  The bag had the Skin Physics Anti-Ageing Intensive Hydration Serum in it.  Its a thick orange serum in a 25ml glass/ceramic bottle and is dispensed via eyedropper.  I've been using it morning and night since it arrived (about three weeks ago).   After I apply serums, I usually go off and find something else to do, so I give it plenty of time to absorb.  This serum absorbs nicely.  Some serums I feel like I have to apply a moisturiser soon after but this one doesn't make me feel as rushed.  There is no stickiness and I've had no issues with break outs.  It works well with my makeup and doesn't pill.  I've only been using it for over three weeks so its too early to tell whether this has visibly reduced wrinkles and lines but my skin is definitely feeling more hydrated.  At this point, though,  I feel I can recommend it and at $40 its not overpriced.

Beautyheaven very kindly sent me a discovery bag recently.  In the bag was the Manicare RapidDry Hair Turban.  I used to use something similar when I was younger but have not had a real need for this for a few years or even thought it might be a need.  My hair is now about bra strap length but I had kept it short for a few years previously.  I can get all my hair in with lots of room to spare.  I don’t blow dry or straighten my hair unless I'm "going out" or feel like being a bit special.   I usually just let it air dry but I think these types of hair towels are an excellent idea for when I do want to style my hair but I want to do my makeup or try on outfits first.  I'm thinking this will come in extra handy though during Summer when I'm in and out of the pool but imagine that the chlorine will eventually change the soft tufts to crunchy crusts.

Beautyheaven sent me a discovery bag of things to discover and try.  In the bag was the Lady Jayne Gemtip Rainbow Brush.  This is a brush specifically for detangling and for all hair types.  On the back of the packaging it states that the Rainbow Brush was designed with little ones in mind.  This is probably why they've gone with colourful bristles.  This doesn't mean it cant be used on adults but I've only used it on myself.  The pastel coloured bristles don't bother me and its not as if I put my hairbrush on display.   I have bra strap length hair which is curly and frizzy and always knotty.  I've been using this on my damp hair when I get out of the shower (unwashed and washed hair) instead of my usual comb.  It does say it can be used on wet hair.  It goes through my hair more easily than the comb and does not leave my hair any frizzier.  It takes up more room than a comb (duh because its a brush) so in a bathroom that's already crammed full of beauty products it takes up precious real estate but for the moment its earned its place.

In the recent discovery bag that Beautyheaven sent me was a tube of Color and Soin Masque For Coloured Hair. It’s a 200ml squeeze tube with a flip top lid.  The masque is thick, an off white and smells like candy.  It takes a little bit of extra effort to squeeze the thick cream out, I think due to the plastic tube being so thick and tough. I have naturally dark brown hair which I have been dying black for about three years.  My hair is curly, frizzy and dry. One of the reasons why I stopped lightening my hair and started dying my hair darker was I was worried about the damage the bleaching products were doing to my hair but I still have the frizzy and dry hair.  My hair did seem to drink the masque in and was easily rinsed out but I can’t report that it was any better at detangling than my other conditioning products.  Whether or not it has made my colour last longer is hard to say as I only refreshed my hair colour a few days before starting my three week trial of this product and the colour still looks good as it should, which would be due to the quality of the hair dye.  In regards to frizz, I dont think the results were all that impressive.  My frizz was okay but the results weren't as good as when I use my usual hair masque.  Its not a bad product but not a product I'd say to a friend "go and get yourself one".

I was recently gifted a discovery bag by Beautyheaven.  One of the items in the discovery bag was the Mavala Switzerland Lip-shine Lipstick in shade 308 - Golden Gate. The Lipstick is housed in a sleek silver metal tube and the tube lid snaps on securely with a satisfying click.  The colour of the lipstick appears red in real life but on my lips it presents as a dark pink, which was a little unexpected.  It also smells a little sweet too, not complaining.  My favourite way to apply this shade is lightly, just a few dots, a lip rub together and I get a nice fresh looking pink.  Its not a gloss and not a matte, more of a satin type shine.  It doesnt tend to last for longer than a couple of hours or so on my lips but on the plus side doesn't leave behind difficult to remove marks on my mugs or glasses.  My husband is constantly complaining that the mugs and glasses that come out of the dishwasher still have remnants of my lippy but for the last three weeks that I have been trialling this lipstick, I've not heard a peep from him.  Its a hydrating lipstick, feels creamy on, not sticky and doesn't dry out my lips.  I'd recommend this lipstick and would purchase from this range (if I didnt already have a gazillion lipsticks in my stash).  I did take off one star due to the fact it looks like a dark red/burgundy even on the website and if I had paid money for this, expecting a red and getting a pink, I'd be upset.

I got the Natio Intense Colour Lip Crayon in the shade Dusty Rose a while ago from a Priceline Sister Club Lucky Dip Mystery bag.  I only paid $5 for it.  Its a lovely neutral muted dusty rose-pink shade.  What it's labelled as, is exactly how I'd describe it but it can look different on other peoples lips.  I found it to be long wearing and non drying.  I did struggle for a while to find a sharpener that it would fit into but the Chemist Warehouse brand works well.  I would suggest not carrying it around in a pocket, as I did, even on a non-warm day as it softened the tip.  But once out of my pocket it hardened up so it was useable again.  I'd recommend this lip crayon for its longevity and the versatile shade.
