WRESTLING: Dual-meet success on Sequim senior night

SEQUIM — Sequim wrestlers pinned down a senior night Olympic League dual meet victory in a 44-35 triumph over Olympic at Rick Kaps Gymnasium this week.

“Each kid wrestled hard and never gave up, they were highly responsive to the coaches and ultimately it was a fun night for Sequim Wrestling,” Wolves coach Tyler Izatt said.

“All of the seniors, Dylan Bowen, James Mason and Jayms Vilona [won their matches]. James and Dylan secured falls early in the match and Jayms secured a technical fall for us.”

Izatt said Andre Linson’s comeback pin at 3:30 of his 150-pound weight class match proved crucial late in the meet.

“Andre’s win was not only fun to watch as we were down 7-0 when Andre hit a reversal and put his opponent on their back to secure the fall,” Izatt said. “But the team score at the time of Andre’s match was Sequim leading 32-23.

“Andre’s only a freshman and really shined through for us on Wednesday. His wrestling career will be fun to watch.”

Linson’s triumph at 150 put Sequim up 38-23 with two contested matches remaining at 157 and 165. Izatt said that the team knew that the meet was likely won with with Mason coming up at 157.

A Wolves forfeit in the final match at 175 would give Olympic six final points, so a Sequim win or a loss by decision would secure the meet victory.

“We knew we were a strong favorite at 157-pounds as James Mason is one of our stronger wrestlers and was likely to secure the fall for us,” Izatt said.

Izatt said Bailey Stein’s 120-pound 10-7 sudden victory win over Shianne Kugler in overtime was another meet highlight.
