WOMEN’S SOCCER: Second-half surge lifts Peninsula

PORT ANGELES — Three goals over 21 minutes in the second half gave the Peninsula College women all the cushion they would need in a 4-1 NWAC North Division soccer victory over Skagit Valley on Wednesday at Wally Sigmar Field.

The Pirates opened up the scoring in the 15th minute.

Skagit Valley was unable to clear the ball from in front of the net after a Peninsula corner kick. The ball leaked out to Jaeda Mae Edayan who sent in a blast off the crossbar and on to Risa Nishida in front of net. Nishida was tripped up by Cardinals defender Jaden Lumpkin, earning a penalty kick which was promptly dispatched to the right side of the net for a 1-0 Peninsula advantage.

The Pirates grew their 1-0 halftime lead with scores in the 52nd, 55th and 73rd minute.

In the 52nd minute, Peninsula built up play in the Cardinal’s end of the field and Edayan sent a cross into the box to Paige Johnson. Johnson redirected the ball up to Shawna Larson in the goal box and Larson made a feint to her left and went to her right foot, crossing up Lumpkin and burying the ball to the right side of the net.

Lumpkin was whistled for a handball in the 55th minuteShiori Shintaku crossed up the goalkeeper going to her left with her penalty kick attempt for a 3-0 Pirates lead.

In the 73rd, Lauren Lases nutmegged the Skagit Valley defender on the end line [kicks ball through defender’s legs and back to themselves] then crossed the ball back to her right to Kawai Bento who booted it in from about 18 yards out for a 4-0 lead.

Carly Bartlow notched Skagit Valley’s goal in the 85th minute, when she sent a line drive free kick to the upper right corner of the goal, with no chance of a save by Peninsula goalkeeper Alexandra Naill.

Paige Mason, a 2024 Port Angeles High School graduate, started and played the whole game in midfield for the Cardinals.

Peninsula hosts Edmonds on Saturday at 2:15 p.m.
