WOMEN’s COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Peninsula women drop pair at Pierce tournament

STEILACOOM — Despite a rough shooting day from Leilani Padilla and Casandra White, the Peninsula women’s basketball team managed to stay within double digits of a 5-1 Lane College team until late in the game.

In the end, the shooting woes were too much to overcome as the Pirates lost 65-50 to Lane in their Saturday game at the Pierce College Holiday Classic.

Padilla and White, normally sure shooters for the Pirates, went a combined 6 for 33 from the floor and 2 for 17 from 3-point range. The entire team shot 17 for 66 (25.8 percent).

White led the Pirates in scoring with 13. Logan Luke had nine points and eight rebounds, while and Kayla Johnson had eight points. Kameron Bowen led the Pirates in rebounds with 10 and Padilla contributed four steals.

Peninsula managed to hang with Lane for much of the game, down eight to 10 points through much of the contest. After a Luke offensive rebound and basket, Peninsula found itself down just 56-46 with 3:19 left. But that was the closest the Pirates could get down the stretch as the Titans outscored Peninsula 9-4 to close out the game.

Friday’s Game Wenatchee Valley 68, Peninsula 57

The Peninsula women gave defending NWAC champion Wenatchee Valley a hard time with two big runs at the end of the third quarter and the fourth quarter being the difference for the 6-1 Knights.

The Pirates actually had a two-point lead late in the third quarter against Wenatchee Valley, but the Knights went on a 13-2 run to end the third quarter.

The Pirates were up 36-34 with 3:11 left in the quarter before Wenatchee Valley’s run made it 47-38 to begin the fourth. That three-minute stretch was the difference as Wenatchee Valley won by 11 points at the end.

Peninsula fought back to within six points in the fourth quarter at 59-53, but that was as close as the Pirates would get as Wenatchee Valley finished the game on a 9-4 run.

Padilla led the Pirates with 26 points, shooting 4 for 9 from 3-point range. White scored 12 and pulled down nine rebounds, while Luke had eight points and six boards.

Peninsula (3-3) will play Pierce at noon today to finish at the Pierce Holiday Classic. The Pirates get another crack at Wenatchee Valley on Saturday at the Tacoma Crossover Tournament.
