WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Peninsula wins first game of the year

OLYMPIA — The Peninsula basketball women controlled the boards and held South Puget Sound to a measly 27 percent shooting from the floor to collect their first win of the year 55-44.

Taisha Thomas and Yamilei Rodriguez each shot 6-for-10 from the field for the Pirate women in the Tuesday road game. Thomas scored 14 with seven rebounds and Rodriguez added 13 and six rebounds. Alicia Dugan only scored six points, but ralled 11 rebounds and five assists and two steals.

Peninsula (1-2) got off to a furious start, outscoring the Clippers 23-7 in the first quarter. The Pirates held the Clippers to 16-for-60 from the field and scored 13 points off turnovers versus six points off turnovers for South Puget Sound. They also outrebounded the Clippers 53-41.

Peninsula shot 23-for-65 from the floor, but the Pirates struggled from the free-throw line, making 6 of 14 from the charity stripe.

All of the Pirates’ games this year have been on the road so far. Peninsula finally plays a home game on Dec. 2 against Wenatchee.
