WEST COAST LEAGUE: Raptors complete sweep over Lefties

PORT ANGELES — Despite a couple of monster games from Jeremy Giesegh and Ethan Kodama, the Ridgefield Raptors were able to complete a three-game sweep over the Port Angeles Lefties, 11-7 on Thursday night.

Giesegh, from Cal State San Bernardino, has been the big hitting star for the Lefties all season. He went 3-for-4 with a double, a three-run home run and four RBIs, raising his batting average to a sterling .393 for the season, not counting nonleague games.

Kodama, from the University California, Berkeley, was also stellar, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

But the Lefties’ pitchers struggled, giving up 12 hits, eight walks and two home runs to the Raptors. Starter Jake Cumming went 4⅓ innings and took the loss. He allowed just four hits but walked six. Reliever Joshua Verkuilen did well, going 1⅓ innings and allowing one hit, no runs and striking out one.

Julio Vasquez Jr. (Henderson University) had a double, a run scored and an RBI. Jack Kleveno (Utah) walked twice and scored two runs.

After his huge game Thursday, Giesegh is now the second-leading hitter in the West Coast League behind Dane Woodcock’s (Springfield) league-leading .409. Giesegh is also leading the WCL in home runs with three and is second in the league with 16 RBIs.

The Lefties (3-12) look to get back on the winning track, taking on the Kelowna Falcons for a three-game series. Friday’s game was after press deadline and Saturday’s game is at 6:35 p.m. Sunday’s day game begins at 1:35 p.m.

“We’re just looking for that timely hit,” Vasquez Jr. said in an interview with the Lefties broadcasters prior to the game. “We’re just looking for that one hit that’ll drive in those few runs that we need to put ourselves on top and keep ourselves in the game. I think we’re close to it.”
