WEST COAST LEAGUE: Lefties give Knights all they can handle

CORVALLIS, Ore. — The Port Angeles Lefties gave the defending West Coast League champion Corvallis pretty much all they could handle this weekend, but in three straight games, the Knights got runs late to pull out victories.

The Lefties lost 4-3 to the 13-1 Knights on Sunday after losing 6-3 on Saturday and 4-3 on Friday. In every game, the Lefties were tied or ahead late, showing that Port Angeles can definitely compete against the powerhouse of the WCL.

On Sunday, the Lefties scored a run in the seventh and another in the eighth to tie Corvallis at 3-3. The Knights were able to pull out the win in the bottom of the ninth with a single, steal and a Lefties error.

Brett Haggerty (Yakima Valley College) was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Zach Blair (Mount Hood Community College) was 0-for-1 with two RBIs, both of which came on sacrifice flies.

Travis Helm (Central Washington) was 1-for-2 with a run scored and a walk, raising his average to .357.

Jeremy Giesegh (Cal State, San Bernardino) was 1-for-4 with a walk and stolen base. With his hit, he maintained a .358 batting average.

Five Lefties pitchers gave up just six hits, but were hurt by five errors.

Colby Scheuber (Salem International) started, going five innings and allowing three earned runs on four hits. He walked two and struck out two.

Relievers Aaden Anderson (Lower Columbia) and Brock Mayer (Point Loma Nazarene) pitched well in relief, going a combined two hitless innings with a walk and a strikeout.

Francisco Lopez (Yakima Valley Community College) was the hard-luck loser, despite not allowing an earned run.

The Lefties (3-9) return home from a 2-4 road trip to face Ridgefield (3-8) at 6:35 p.m. today at Civic Field.
