SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — The Port Angeles Lefties struggled with Springfield’s speed and power in a 15-10 loss to the Drifters on Saturday night.
The Lefties also lost a close game 4-3 on Friday night as a comeback attempt fell just short.
The Drifters pounded out 13 hits, including six extra-base hit,s and stole 12 bases to generate their 15 runs. Lefties pitchers also walked six batters and hit two more.
The Lefties had plenty of offense themselves with four extra-base hits, but the Drifters had a 15-5 lead by the end of the fifth inning and it was too much of a hole to dig out of.
Jeremy Giesegh (Cal State San Bernardino) was 1-for-5 with a double, a stolen base and an RBI. Eddie Alfaro (Riverside CC) was 1-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a sacrifice fly.
Ty Thomas (Cal State, Fullerton) was 1-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Garrett Patterson (Chaffey College) had a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Tyler Shulman (Harvard) was twice hit by a pitch and had a hit and an RBI.
While much of the Lefties staff struggled, allowing 19 baserunners over the first five innings, Mason Seay (University of Puget Sound) actually pitched well over the final three innings. He allowed one hit and one walk while striking out one. Takuma Sato (Mount Hood CC) started and took the loss.
Friday’s Game
The Lefties got down 4-0 early to the Drifters on Friday night, but battled back all game. Garrett Holpuch (Tennessee Tech) gave up four runs in the first two innings, only one of them earned, but then clamped down the rest of the game, blanking the Drifters the rest of the way. He went 7â…” innings, allowing six hits, one walk and one earned run while striking out six. Cade Stuart (Fresno Pacific) got the final out.
The Lefties scored one in the third, one in the seventh and one in the eighth and had a chance to pull the game out with two runners on base and no outs in the ninth. Springfield was able to get two strikeouts and a groundout to end the game, however.
At the plate, Jeremy Giesegh (Cal State San Bernardino) hit a solo home run, his fourth of the year, while Danny Porras (Gig Harbor) had an RBI double. Will White (Cal State Bakersfield) hit a triple and Taylor Kirk (Fordham) went 2-for-4.
The Lefties (16-28, 5-12 second half) and Drifters (21-23, 9-8 second half) played late Sunday with the result after press deadline.
Port Angeles returns home for a rare Monday game at 6:35 p.m. tonight at Civic Field against Wenatchee (25-19, 9-8).
