WEST COAST LEAGUE: Lefties drop rubber match in Victoria

VICTORIA, B.C. — The Port Angeles Lefties lost two out of three in a series at their cross-channel rival Victoria this weekend, dropping the rubber game Sunday 6-1 as the HarbourCats’ pitching staff held the Lefties to just five hits.

Jett Nelson (Jamestown University), Jay O’Neill (Gwinnett Georgia College), Sam Matosich (Centralia College), Dom Dominguez (Cal State, San Bernardino) and Chanz Doughty (Stony Brook), all had hits. O’Neill had the Lefties’ lone RBI, while Nelson scored a run.

On the mound, Brad Johnson pitched well in relief, going three innings and allowing no hits and no runs, he walked two.

The Lefties come home to Civic Field to host a pitch, hit and run event at 3 p.m. today. They begin a three-game nonleague series at home at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday against the Seattle Gumberoos of the Pacific International League.

O’Neill had a huge weekend in Victoria, going 8-for-12 (.667) and lifting his batting average for the season to .400.

Saturday’s Game

The Lefties pounded out nine hits, but Victoria erupted for a seven-run fourth inning in a 10-4 win Saturday night.

Pitcher Jack Joyce (Linn-Benton CC) took the loss.

At the plate, O’Neill had his second big day in a row, going 3-for-5 with a run scored. Eric Valdivia (Chaffey college) was 2-for-3, while Matosich was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Levi Joyce (Edmonds CC) had a double and two RBIs.

Ryan Rodriguez (Centralia College) started on the mound, going three innings and allowing one hit and no runs.

Friday’s Game

The Lefties got their second win in a row 9-3 over Victoria behind a great pitching performance from Jake Cumming and a big day at the plate by several players.

Victoria got up 2-0 in the first inning but was held scoreless over the next six innings as the Lefties battled back. Cumming of Fernley, Nev., pitched four no-hit innings in relief, striking out seven. He picked up the victory.

At the plate, the Lefties pounded out 14 hits, led by O’Neill, who was 4-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Dominguez hit a double and drove in three runs.

Valvidia was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI, while Nelson was 3-for-5 with a run scored.

Levi Joyce had a double and a stolen base, while Matosich had a hit, a run scored and an RBI.
