WEST COAST LEAGUE: Big inning lifts Lefties to victory over Walla Walla

WALLA WALLA — The Port Angeles Lefties won their fourth straight, getting a combination of solid pitching and a seven-run fourth inning to beat Walla Walla 7-1.

A trio of Lefties pitchers allowed just six hits and struck out 11. Cade Stuart (Edmonds Community College) got the victory, going six shutout innings in relief, allowing three hits and striking out six. He walked four. Joshua Verkuilen (Chaffey College) went two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out three.

Damian Hernandez (University of California, Riverside) pitched the opening inning but had to leave due to elbow tightness.

Jeremy Giesegh (California State, San Bernardino), who had a two-home-run day Sunday, remained hot, going 2-for-5 with a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base. He is now batting .419, third in the West Coast League.

“It’s just staying locked in, staying in the at-bats and hitting outside and doing whatever it takes to make sure you’re always ready to play,” Giesegh said Sunday after his game against the Seattle Gumbaroos.

The Lefties went into the fourth down 1-0 and erupted for seven runs on four hits, two walks and two Walla Walla errors. Jason Leon (California State, Bakersfield) and Roberto Nunez (Embry-Riddle) each had RBI doubles, Giesegh an RBI single and Colin Spear (Nevada) a two-run single.

Leon finished the day 2-for-4.

The Lefties played Walla Walla Wednesday night after press deadline, then play the Sweets again at 6:30 p.m. today. The games can be viewed at the West Coast League streaming site at www.wcleague.watch.pixellot.tv.
