RICHLAND — Forks limited Lynden Christian to four hits as the Spartans made a successful Class 1A State Softball Tournament debut in a 5-0 shutout of Lynden Christian on Friday.
“We ended up winning, I don’t know if I can say we played great,” Forks coach Dennis Dean said. “I would have liked to have scored more than five runs.”
Britney Dean went the distance in the circle for Forks, striking out 12 and walking one to earn the win.
Rian Peters went 4 for 4 for the Spartans, scoring the game’s first run in the fifth inning on a Jayden Olson RBI double.
Chloe Leverington brought home Olson with a two-run home run to put Forks up 3-0 after five.
Freshman Aspen Rondeau went 2 for 3 for the Spartans (12-10). She led off the top of the seventh with a double and scored an insurance run for Forks on a triple by Peters.
Olson bunted Peters home to account for the final run.
She finished 2 for 3 and was hit by a pitch.
Forks advanced to face Cle Elum-Roslyn later Friday for a shot in the state semifinals.
“We’re going to pitch Chloe in the second game, so we are going to throw speed at them and I think they’ll try and throw it back at us,” Dean said.
Class 2A
Port Angeles alive
The Roughriders were bashed by W.F. West’s power bats in a 19-2 state-opening loss Friday at Carlon Park in Selah.
Port Angeles staved off elimination with a 6-0 shutout of Olympic League foe North Kitsap.
Jada Cargo put the Riders ahead 1-0 with an RBI double in the first inning.
Port Angeles took advantage of some friendly winds against the Vikings, hitting two home runs in the top of the fifth.
Olivia Nevaril gave Port Angeles some cushion with a two-run home run-shot to left field with two outs in the inning.
The next batter — Aeverie Politika — went even deeper, hitting a solo bomb to left field that announcers estimated landed 40 beyond the fence.
Teagen Clark led off the sixth with a triple and scored on Ella Holland slap-hit RBI single in the sixth.
Cargo scored the Riders’ last run in the seventh.
Kiana Watson-Charles went the distance for Port Angeles (18-8).
The Riders face the loser of Lynden-Woodland later Friday evening.
A loss ends Port Angeles’ season, while a win sees the Riders play Saturday.
Sequim ousted
It was a quick two-and-out for Sequim at state. The Wolves were hard-luck 6-4 losers to Selah in their state opener Friday afternoon.
The Vikings broke open a 4-4 tie with a two-run line drive double to left field in the top of the sixth inning.
Raelynn Opdyke homered for the Wolves in a loser-out contest against Tumwater, but the Thunderbirds triumphed 6-3.
Sequim finishes the season with a 15-8 record.
Class 1B
Quilcene 10-runned
YAKIMA — The Rangers were beaten 22-9 by Pomeroy in five innings in Quilcene’s Class 1B state opener at Yakima’s Gateway Center.
The Rangers (12-6) must beat Wishkah Valley Friday night to stay alive for a shot at the program’s seventh-straight top four finish at state.
Quilcene has finished fourth twice, third twice and second twice (in 2017 and 2018) in that span.
