Prep linksters from the North Peninsula will be teeing it up in the 1A and 2A boys and girls state golf tournaments being held in Spokane, Pasco and Richland today, with Sequim in particular looking to make some noise at the boys’ and girls’ tourneys.
The 2A boys golfers will tee it up at the Qualchan Golf Club in Spokane for the opening 18-hole round of state, with finalists moving on to a second round Wednesday. Four Sequim boys — Paul Jacobsen, Blake Wiker, Andrew Vanderberg and Josiah Carter — all qualified for state. Wiker, a veteran of the 2A state tourney, won the Olympic League championship, while Jacobsen finished second and Vanderberg fourth. Wiker finished 30th at state last year.
Sequim will also send three girls to state, including four-time qualifier Alex McMenamin. McMenamin finished fifth at state last year and has finished in the top 10 three times, including a third place as a freshman. Joining her is Sarah Shea and Samantha Smith.
McMenamin will be the second girl to tee it up at 7:30 a.m. today at Indian Canyon Golf Course in Spokane.
Three Port Townsend golfers are also at state. Jacob Madison and Patrick Morgan are at the 1A boys tournament at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco, while Mackenzie Lake is at the 1A/1B/2B state championships at Horn Rapids Golf Course in Richland.
