STATE BASEBALL TOURNAMENT: Port Angeles on to Selah to play Tumwater; Quilcene to play in Sequim

OLYMPIA — Times and locations have been picked for both the Port Angeles and Quilcene baseball teams, which begin their respective state tournaments Saturday.

Port Angeles got a relatively good seed at state, being put in No. 3 seed Selah’s region.

The Roughriders (12-11-1), who finished second in the District 3 2A tournament and are seeded No. 11 at state, will play No. 6 seed Tumwater (18-6) at 2 p.m. at Archer Field in Selah (21-2). If the Riders win, they will play the winner of No. 3 Selah (21-2) and No. 14 Cedarcrest (20-6), also at Archer Field, immediately following the conclusion of the earlier game.

Though Selah is seeded No. 3 in the state tournament, the Vikings are ranked No. 1 in the state in Ratings Percentage Index.

If the Riders can win both games, they move on May 30 to the state semifinals at Joe Martin Stadium in Bellingham.

Port Angeles’ record is a little misleading. Of the Riders’ 11 losses, five of them were by one run, and Port Angeles is 8-1 over its past nine games.

Quilcene (12-3), which finished second in the 1B District 1/2 tournament hosts a game at 5 p.m. today against Wahkiakum at Sequim High School.

Quilcene is a No. 6 seed in the state tournament. If the Rangers win, they move on to play No. 3 seed Almira-Coulee-Hartline at 1 p.m. Saturday in Wenatchee.

The No. 3 seed Port Angeles softball team (19-2-1) will also begin play at the state tournament Friday at 9 a.m. against No. 14 Cedarcrest (12-12) at Carlon Park in Selah.

Win and the Roughriders will play at 3:30 p.m. Friday against the winner of No. 6 East Valley-Yakima and No. 11 Woodland. Lose and they would play the loser of that game in the consolation bracket at 1:30 p.m.
