Sports: Sequim girls win postseason game

PUYALLUP — The Sequim High School girls basketball team remained alive in postseason play after defeating Hazen 66-53 in Class 3A West Central District play Tuesday night.

“The girls came out strong and confident,”‘ Wolves head coach Linsay Rapelje said. “They stayed composed and kept us in this thing.”

Rachel Beck’s double-double performance — 21 points and 15 rebounds — led the Wolves.

“She really kept us in this game,” Rapelje said.

Behind Beck was Alana O’Hara with 10 rebounds followed by Brittany Langston with seven.

The Wolves led 33-20 going into halftime.

Hazen came out strong in the second half led by Amber Hinesley with 21 points and Monica Nevi with 15.

Valeyre Huff and Hannah Yamamoto each had 10 points for the Wolves, who move one step closer to a state berth.

Sequim will face the winner of last night’s game between Lakes and Kennedy on Thursday at 8 p.m. at Auburn High School.

In other West Central District play, the Port Townsend boys opened Class 2A play at Curtis High School on Tuesday, defeating Foster 42-36.

The Redskins will take on Vashon Island in Round No. 2 Saturday at Curtis.

In Class B Tri-District play, the Clallam Bay boys picked up their first postseason loss, falling 56-41 to King’s West.

Danny Angulo scored 17 points and Melchor Ramos added 10 for the Bruins (16-4).

Clallam Bay next faces Evergreen Lutheran at 8:30 p.m. on Friday at Chief Leschi in loser-out winner-to-state game.

Also on Tuesday, the Clallam Bay girls lost a Tri-District game 69-60 in double overtime to Evergreen Lutheran.

The Bruin girls next play Darrington at 7 p.m. on Friday in a loser-out game winner-to-state game at Chief Leschi.
