SEQUIM — The Sequim High School girls basketball team lost five players to graduation, the height of the team for the past three years, but coach Erik Wiker isn’t despairing.
That’s because the skill level is the best the fourth-year coach has seen at Sequim.
“We are not tall and we are very young,” he said, “but we have the best outside shooting we have ever had and the girls are very good at basic skills. They have good fundamentals.”
For the first time, Wiker and his staff won’t have to spend a lot of time teaching fundamentals.
“They shoot correctly and they know how to dribble cross-over,” he said. “We have the highest percentage ever who know basic skills.”
There also is a big turnout of 48 players with about 10 being cut. That’s good because besides the five who graduated last spring, three other underclassmen did not return to the varsity team this year.
That leaves only four varsity veterans. But they make up a solid core.
