Sports: Sequim beats Chimacum in baseball 6-1

SEQUIM — The Sequim baseball team picked up right where it left off before spring break, taking down Chimacum 6-1 in Nisqually League play on Thursday.

Shaun Johnson picked up the win on the mound for the Wolves (2-1 in league, 6-2 overall), giving up just one run on three hits with 16 strikeouts.

Offense was a little slow for Sequim until the fifth inning when the Wolves put up five runs on the board, led by Caleb Grubb, who finished the day 2-for-3 with an RBI.

“It took awhile to really put anything together,”‘ Wolves head coach Dan Perry said. “Then we just exploded. That seems to be our M.O. this season.”

Behind Grubb for the Wolves were John Coon (2-for-3) and Chris Keithly (1-for-3, two RBIs).

The Wolves will take on Port Townsend at 4 p.m. today at home.

SEATTLE — The Redskins wasted little time jumping on Seattle Christian in Nisqually League play on Thursday, racking up 14 runs on 14 hits behind the fine pitching performance of Isaiah Sather (2-1).

Sather went six innings, giving up four runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.

But the real story for the Redskins was their bats, led by Keith Johnson, who just missed out on the all-elusive cycle by a home run.

Johnson finished the game 4-for-5 with two triples, a double, single and two RBIs.

“These kids were just hitting machines today,” Redskins head coach Tom Kent said. “They are really hitting the ball well right now. I just don’t know what else to say.”

Behind Johnson for Port Townsend (2-0 in league, 2-1-1 overall) were Josh Unbedacht (3-for-5, four RBIs), Jeff Leone (2-for-4, scored twice) and Sather (2-for-4, four RBIs).
