Sekiu is the place for halibut and this weekend is the time to try your luck.
The eighth annual Sekiu Halibut Derby will be held this Saturday and Sunday.
Top prize is $10 for each pound of the largest fish. Second place is $200 and third place will earn $100.
Another $100 will be given away to the angler with the largest sea bass.
“We’ve had just wonderful halibut fishing,” said Chris Mohr, owner of Van Riper’s Resort, where the derby weigh-in will take place.
Not only can you win money by fishing this weekend, you don’t even need a license to do it.
This Saturday and Sunday is the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Free Fishing Weekend.
No fishing license is needed in state waters those days, but all other rules must be followed.
Note that catch-record cards must still be obtained by anyone targeting halibut, salmon, steelhead, sturgeon and Dungeness crab.
Those cards may be picked up at most sporting goods stores.
