PORT TOWNSEND — For the first time in 20 years, the Port Townsend High School football team is champion of the Nisqually League.
“It feels so good,” Redskins senior Jeremiah Fountain said Friday night after Port Townsend beat Steilacoom 42-21, celebratory yells lifting into the night sky above a frenzied crowd of players, parents and fans on the grass at Jefferson County Memorial Athletic Field.
“Nobody (else) thought we could do it but we believed all week long, all year long,” Fountain said.
Port Townsend is unranked in the state Associated Press 2A poll while Steilacoom is No. 2. The Redskins end the regular season 8-1 in league (9-1 overall), same as the Sentinels, which before Friday hadn’t lost since the quarterfinal round of last year’s state playoffs.
The Sentinels may technically be co-league champs, but the Redskins earned bragging rights, and the Nisqually’s top berth to this year’s state playoffs, by virtue of Friday’s victory.
