Sports: Port Townsend, Chimacum enter state tournament play today

Both Port Townsend and Chimacum have their work cut out for them in the state 2A basketball tournament that starts today at the Yakima SunDome.

Both teams received tough draws and have to play state No. 1-ranked teams in the first round.

The Port Townsend girls basketball team (20-7), the runner-up in the West Central District tournament, plays powerhouse Chelan (21-2) at 9 p.m. Chelan is top ranked in at least one poll and second rated in another.

The Chimacum Cowboys (14-13), meanwhile, will face No. 1-ranked Nooksack Valley (21-1) in the first round of the boys tournament at 4 p.m. today.

The winner of that game plays the victor between Othello (15-9) and Hoquiam (23-0) in the championship quarterfinals Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The losers of the two first-round games meet in a loser-out consolation quarterfinal game Thursday at 12:30 p.m.
