KINGSTON — Joe Barnes earned his second consecutive boys golf Olympic League MVP honor on the same day he led Port Angeles to an undefeated league season.
Barnes shot a 76 on nine holes to take medalist honors as the Roughriders demolished North Kitsap 414-540 in a makeup league dual meet at White Horse Golf Club on Wednesday.
Port Angeles wrapped up the league championship with an unblemished 8-0 record and Barnes won the league MVP with a low nine-hole average of 38.4.
Two other Riders earned all-league honors as Garrett Payton had the third-best average in league with a 39.6 to become one of only three golfers who shot an average below 40 for the year.
The other was Trent Ferris of Olympic, who shot an average of 38.9 for second-best honors.
Also earning first-team all-league recognition was Port Angeles’ Alex Atwell, who averaged 40.6 and was the league’s fourth-best golfer.
Others who made first team honors were Aaron Holiday of Klahowya (41.9), Matt Phillips of Klahowya (42.2) and Cole Coddington of Kingston (43.0).
Against North Kitsap, all top six Riders scored better than anyone for the Vikings as Atwell was three shots behind Barnes with 79, Payton was third with 83, Micah Needham fourth with 89 and Trey Hoover was right behind with 90 for the five scores counted toward the varsity team total.
Austin Underwood, meanwhile, shot 91 for sixth place to beat the best North Kitsap golfer, Marcus Morgan, who was the only Viking to shoot below 100 with 99.
Barnes, who captured sixth place at 2A state last year in his first competitive season in the sport, already has qualified for the 2013 state tournament along with Needham as the two finished in the top seven at the Olympic League tournament last week.
Three other Riders are still in the running for a state berth as they finished the league tourney in the top 15 and advance to Tuesday’s 2A bi-district state-qualifying tourney.
Payton, Atwell and Underwood will be battling for a top-eight finish at bi-districts to advance to state.
The bi-district meet is set for Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton for a 10:30 a.m. start Tuesday.
Sequim’s Jesse Francis also will be competing at the district meet while teammate Anthony Pinza is an alternate and will compete if a qualified golfer can’t make the meet.

BREMERTON — Olympic League first-teamer Aaron Holliday shot a 79 for medalist honors to spark the Eagles to the final league dual meet for both teams at Gold Mountain Golf Club on Wednesday.
Jack Bishop led Port Townsend with 103 to tie for fourth place while teammate Keegan Khile took sixth with a 105.
Austin Khile was close behind with 109 for the Redskins, followed by teammates Zachary Glover with 118 and Ben Rolland with 125.
Girls Golf
All-league honors
Dana Fox of Port Angeles and Elisa Sallee of Sequim earned Olympic League first-team honors.
Klahowya’s Sally Fletcher took league MVP honors with a nine-hole average of 43.6 on the year.
Fox made all-league with a third-best average of 47.3, one of only three who averaged below 50 on the year, while Sallee was fifth best in league with a 51.5.
Other first-team all-leaguers include Aimee Zehrung of Kingston (46.9), Karin Muggli of North Kitsap (50.0), Emily Vernik of Kingston (51.6) and Maddy San Fellipo of North Kitsap (51.9).
Kingston won the girls league championship with a final record of 7-0-1.
Fox and Sequim’s Maddy Fisher both qualified for the 2A state tournament by finishing in the top seven at the Olympic League tournament last week.
Sallee, meanwhile, advanced to the 2A bi-district tourney along with teammates Brianna Kettel and Caitlin Stofferahn.
The top six girls from the bi-district meet qualify for the state tournament.
Like the 2A boys, the 2A girls bi-district tourney starts at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton.
The girls play on Gold Mountain’s Cascade Course while the boys compete on the Olympic Course.
