PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College women’s basketball team, under interim head coach Kathy Langston, fell to the Skagit Valley College Cardinals 63-56 in Northwest Association of Community Colleges North Division play Wednesday night.
The Pirate men’s basketball team, meanwhile, improved to 6-0 in North Division play with a win Wednesday night, downing Skagit Valley 72-58.
Langston, formerly the assistant coach for the women, took over when head coach Derek Witt resigned suddenly for personal reasons Tuesday.
The women led at the half 27-22 but were unable to maintain their edge, outscored by the Cardinals 41-29 in the second half.
Denise Kearns led the Pirates with 12 points while teammate Tasha McCoy added 11.
Peninsula falls to 8-8 on the season and is tied for sixth place at 2-3 in North Division play.
The loss comes one day after Witt resigned.
Peninsula College athletic director Rick Ross didn’t want to go into details of why Witt quit because of the personal nature of the resignation.
Langston took over as interim head coach for the final six weeks of the season.
