SPORTS: Matt Schubert’s five best things to do this weekend

• Last Chance — The LaPush Last Chance Salmon Derby comes to the West End this Saturday and Sunday.

The event includes prizes for coho and chinook categories, with the first-, second- and third-largest fish all earning cash rewards.

There will also be prizes for the largest lingcod and bottomfish. Tickets cost $30.

For more information, contact the Forks Chamber of Commerce at 360-374-2531.

• Sekiu silvers — It might not be the official end, but it might as well be.

The coho tend to disappear from the Marine Area 5 (Sekiu) waters once the calendar flips to October. So get in on the action while you still can.

Considering how much success anglers had on Thursday, it should be worth the trip.

• Sol Duc cutthroat — Yes, I’m pimping this fishery for the second straight week. No, nobody will probably listen to me.

But if you like lots of action and an enjoyable day on the river, then head out to the Sol Duc with a box of caddis flies and have it.

• Mushroom Mania — The PDN’s annual mushroom contest is back.

Now it’s up to you to go out and find the winner in either one of three categories (largest, prettiest and mushroom most resembling Matt Schubert).

Only picture submissions will be accepted, and those must be sent to matt.schubert@peninsuladailynews.com. The winner for each category receives $50. Submissions are due Nov. 3.

• Kayakers’ heaven — The West Coast Sea Kayak Symposium hits Fort Worden State Park today through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

There will be numerous on-water clinics, the latest gear from many of the leading kayak manufacturers as well as a concert on Saturday night.

Registration is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. today through Sunday.
