Sports: Halibut derby sign-ups deadline today (Friday)

Sign-ups for the Port Angeles Salmon Club’s third annual halibut derby will be taken until midnight today.

Top prize is $5,000.

Derby hours are daylight until 2 p.m. Saturday and daylight until noon Sunday.

In all, 40 monetary awards totaling just more than $20,000 will be given away to the anglers with the largest halibut.

Second place is $2,500, and $1,500 will go to third.

Organizers expect participants from as far away as Idaho to tow their boats to town. Tickets cost $30 for one or both days.

Anyone buying tickets today needs to make their way to the Port Angeles Yacht Club, behind Destiny Seafood and Grill at 1213 Marine Drive.

Tickets will be on sale from 10 a.m. until midnight.

The official weigh-in will also take place at the yacht club.

Every angler in a participating boat must have a derby ticket. Organizers have been adamant on this point, so don’t try and get by without buying a ticket for everyone — regardless of age — on board your boat.

Derby boundaries are all U.S. waters between a line running north from Crescent Beach and a line running north from the base of Dungeness Spit.
