SPORTS BRIEFS: Port Angeles’ Johnson places at twirling event

STOCKTON, Calif. — Port Angeles’ Selah Johnson, 15, garnered top places in three events during the World Baton Twirling Federation’sPan-Pacific Cup Championship held Jan. 13-15.

Johnson, competing in the 14-17 age division, came in third in the open artistic twirl, fourth in solo and sixth in the two-baton.

Johnson competed against twirlers from the U.S., Australia, Japan and Canada.

In June, Johnson will travel to California for her regional competition, then she will compete in Nationals in July in Wisconsin and then shewill travel with the qualifying U.S. team to compete in Croatia in August.

Cowboys come close against Aberdeen

ABERDEEN — Fouls got the Chimacum basketball girls in trouble early, but they rallied in the second half to nearly pull off a road upsetover 2A Aberdeen, eventually falling 49-44.

“The first quarter we jumped out to a 12-2 lead and then the trouble started where we were called at a high rate of fouls and hit bonusbefore we left the first quarter,” said coach Trevor Huntingford.

The Cowboys then rallied for 18 points in the fourth to put a scare into Aberdeen.

“In the fourth we picked up our aggression because at that point we had no choice,” Huntingford said.

“Really proud of the girls for not checking out completely and being able to fight back in the fourth and make a nice run at Aberdeen. Ifelt most of the girls played really well in this game,” he said.

Mechelle Nisbet scored 15 points for the Cowboys, her 15th double-digit scoring game out of 16. Maddie Dowling scored eight andShanya Nisbet seven.

Chimacum (8-8, 2-4) next plays at home at 7 p.m. Today against the Port Angeles JV.

Elks Hoops winners

PORT ANGELES — The Naval Elks No. 353 announced the winners of the Elks Hoop Shoot contest in Port Angeles Jan. 21.

The winners will go to the District contest to be held at teh Sequim Boys & Girls Club on Saturday starting at noon. The winners of thatcontest will adance to the state champion on Feb. 25, then regional and finally the national championship in Chicago on April 22.

Bryce DeLeon, 8-9, 15-for-25; Keatyn Hoch, 10-11, 14-for-25; James Burkhardt 12-13, 23-for-25.

Girls

Isabelle Felton, 10-11, 19-for-25.
