SPORTS BRIEFS: Peninsula men’s soccer responds with 3-0 win

PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula men’s soccer team got a shutout from its defense and goals from three different scorers in bouncing back from their first loss of the year to beat Everett 3-0.

Coach Jake Hughes thought the team showed a lot of character, recovering from a tough 2-1 loss Friday against Whatcom.

“We had a hard game at Whatcom and we performed at a level we expect to and showed a reaction,” Hughes said. “It was a difficult game with a number of cards [Five yellows and two reds], and we righted what went wrong in the previous game.”

In this game, the Pirates had zero cards.

The Pirates also allowed zero shots on goal and only one shot, period. Hughes said the defense played well, but it was more of a case that Peninsula controlled the ball. Goalkeeper Ian Dalton picked up the shutout.

On offense, Nicolas Hernandez, one of the team’s holdovers from their 2019 NWAC championship squad, had a goal and an assist, while Nicolas Namuali and Kai Biegler each scored. Dylan Pauw also had an assist.

Peninsula (3-1) next plays at Edmonds (0-3) on Thursday.
