SPORTS BRIEF: Port Angeles baseball opens season with loss

KIRKLAND — Luke Angevine had three hits, including a double as Port Angeles went up against one of the toughest pitchers in the state in Lake Washington on Saturday, losing 10-2.

“This was our first game of the season for both teams. It was a great opportunity for our guys to compete against one of the top teams and one of the top pitchers [Nick Ludlow, who is committed to play for Claremont McKenna College in California] in the state,” said Port Angeles coach Karl Myers.

“I was very proud of the way our kids fought all game long, even after a slow start. There were plenty of positives, specifically some great defensive plays by Angevine and Ben Basden up the middle as well as Hayden Woods in center. This game really allowed us to see some specifics that we need to work on to prepare for the start of league play next week,” Myers said.

Angevine hit 3-for-3, while Noah McGoff went 1-3 with an RBI and Joel Wood went 1-3 with a run. The losing pitcher was Dane Bradow.

Port Angeles is set to play at home at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday against Bremerton, weather permitting.
