PREPS: Sequim golfers tame Trojans

SEQUIM — Carter Cronin led Sequim with the low round of the day, shooting a nine-hole score of 40, as the Wolves bested Olympic 169-189 in boys golf Wednesday at The Cedars at Dungeness.

“Conditions were tough with winds gusting up to 15 miles an hour,” coach Sean O’Mera said. “However, that didn’t stop the boys from playing some good golf.”

“Carter’s round was highlighted by a great punch-out on hole six from a tricky situation and a nice par save on hole seven.”

Lars Wiker was next for Sequim after shooting a career-best round of 41.

“Lars played really solid all day,” O’Mera said.

“Again, it was nothing flashy, but just overall a combination of good solid ball striking. His putter caught fire both early and late, as he drained an 8-footer for par on hole one and a slippery 9-footer for par on No. 9. In between, he had two great par saves on both par 3s, including an up and down out of the sand on hole No. 4.”

Zack Thompson overcame a triple bogey on the second hole to shoot 43 and Cole Smithson added a 45 for the Wolves.

“Most would have folded; that is not a word in Zack’s vocabulary,” O’Mera said.
