PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Errors end Sequim baseball’s undefeated start

SEQUIM — Sequim couldn’t hang on to an early 7-3 lead and fell to Class 3A Roosevelt in a nonleague baseball game.

Seven errors contributed to knocking the Wolves (2-0, 4-1) from the ranks of the unbeaten.

Sequim pitcher Rudy Whitehead was tagged with the loss after allowing eight runs, only two of which were earned, on seven hits in four innings on the mound in Tuesday’s game.

James Grubb led the Wolves at the plate going 4 for 5 with four RBIs. Gavin Velarde was 3 for 5 with three runs and an RBI and Ian Miller had an RBI double for Sequim.

The Wolves hosted rival Port Angeles on Wednesday and will visit Olympic (0-1, 2-3) today.

PORT ANGELES — Logan Kovalenko led a losing effort by the Roughriders with a nine-hole round of 44 on the front nine at Peninsula Golf Club.

Royce Duncan also carded a personal-best round of 48 for Port Angeles.

“I was happy to see the big smile on Royce’s face — a lot clicked for him today,” Riders coach Gil Stockton said.

Parker Elias added a 54 and Cameron Fouts shot 56 for Port Angeles (3-2).

“Among other things, the guys said they needed [to work on], was our need to spend even more time on our short game and focus on each individual shot,” Stockton said.

Olympic’s C.J. Lagat earned medalist honors with a two-over par 38.

The Riders visit Sequim on Wednesday, April 12.

Girls Golf

Olympic 208, Port Angeles 256

PORT ANGELES — Tana Hiigel led the Riders with a nine-hole round of 61 in a loss to the Trojans.

Gillian Elofson and Olivia Due each shot rounds of 64, and Aeverie Politika added a 67 for Port Angeles.

Abby Magee earned medalist honors with a 49 for the Trojans.
