BREMERTON — In a see-saw battle against two of the Olympic League’s powerhouses, the Port Angeles softball team was undone by a late grand slam from Olympic in an 11-9 loss Monday on the road.
The outcome sets up a crucial game for the Roughriders at Dry Creek on Thursday against North Kitsap as both Port Angeles and North Kitsap are now tied for the league lead at 8-1. Olympic remains one-half game back at 8-2.
The Riders split two close games with Olympic this season, beating the Trojans 4-3 early in the year. Olympic, Port Angeles and North Kitsap are all ranked in the top 10 in the state in Ratings Percentage Index.
The Riders got a grand slam themselves in the third inning from Lexie Smith. She finished the day 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Port Angeles got up 5-0 after Smith’s slam, but the Trojans bounced back with five runs in the bottom of the third to knot the game up at 5-5.
The Riders scored a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 9-6 lead into the sixth inning. Olympic blew up for five runs in the bottom of the sixth, with four of those runs coming on a grand slam from Beya Richmond.
Abby Kimball also had a solo home run for Port Angeles, while Morgan Politika had a hit, two stolen bases and two runs scored. Ava-Anne Sheahan had a double and two RBIs and Mariah Traband had a hit and an RBI.
Lynzee Reid took the loss, going the entire game and allowing 13 hits. Top Port Angeles pitcher Heidi Leitz was saved for the North Kitsap game.
Port Angeles’ (8-1, 11-2-1, No. 9 RPI) game with North Kitsap (8-1, 11-2, No. 4 RPI) will begin at 4:15 p.m. Thursday at Dry Creek School.

BAINBRIDGE — The Sequim softball team had its biggest offensive output of the year, pounding out 18 hits in a 20-10 win over Bainbridge on Monday.
The Wolves blew open a 6-6 game with a 13-run fourth inning as 17 batters came to the plate.
Several Wolves had big games, led by Mia Kirner, who went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, three runs scored and seven RBIs.
Kylie Winter was 3-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and an RBI, while Hannah Giddings was 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Mikki Green was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI, while Rilynn Whitehead was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs and Manuela Valle was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs. Ava Ritter had a double, while Grace Gardner had a double and two RBIs.
Sequim (2-7, 3-9) next hosts Olympic (8-2, 13-2) at 4:15 p.m. Thursday.

LACEY — The Quilcene baseball team suffered its first lost of the year, as 10 errors led to six unearned runs as Northwest Christian beat the Rangers 9-3.
The duo of Eli Allen and Oliver Hopkins pitched well, as usual, giving up only four hits and three earned runs while striking out 11. The Rangers managed just four hits, with Hopkins and Jayden Minish each hitting a double. Jayden Love had a hit, a run scored and an RBI, while Allen had a hit.
