PREP SOFTBALL: Port Angeles a No. 1 seed at district; Sequim qualifies for tournament

LACEY — The Olympic League champion Port Angeles softball team knows its district opponent Saturday, while Sequim made the district tournament as a No. 12 seed.

As expected, the Roughriders (16-2-1 overall) are the tournament’s No. 1 seed. Port Angeles is ranked No. 3 in the state in Ratings Percentage Index.

As the top seed, Port Angeles gets a first-round bye and will play its first game at noon Friday at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey, against the winner of No. 8 seed North Mason (12-8) and No. 9 seed Washington (11-5).

If the Riders win this game, they play again at 5 p.m. Saturday at the same site, likely against North Kitsap. Win that game and they qualify for the state tournament and the district championship game. Lose and they are in the third-place game and qualify for state with a victory.

Three out of the four first-round byes are for Olympic League teams — Port Angeles, Olympic and North Kitsap.

Sequim was the last team in. The Wolves are 3-13 with one game left Wednesday against Bainbridge that they have a very good chance of winning. They play No. 5 seed Fife (14-7 overall) at 10 a.m. Friday in a loser-out game. If they win, they move on to play North Kitsap at noon Friday, then play another game against an opponent to be determined at 5 p.m.
