SHORELINE — The Port Angeles girls soccer team opened its 2025 season with a 1-0 shutout victory at King’s this weekend.
“We felt as good as you can for a first game. We didn’t know a lot about King’s going in, but we knew they would be good,” said coach Dan Horton. “We did what we needed to do.”
Horton said for the most part, the defense played well, only allowing four non-corner kick shots. Last year’s starting goalkeeper, Kennedy Rognlien, earned the shutout. Though he said it wasn’t a perfect game and that there “were a couple of scary situations with through balls getting through.”
The Roughriders’ goal was scored in the 52nd minute by freshman Emma Desjardins playing in her first varsity game in the midfield position. Brooke Pierce got the assist on a throw-in. After a deflection, Desjardins collected the ball and scored.
There have been some changes to Port Angeles’ schedule. The Riders host Klahowya at 5:45 p.m. today at the Monroe Field. A Tuesday game against Forks at Peninsula College has been canceled.
