PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles runners rolled to a home-meet victory Wednesday at Lincoln Park with the Roughriders winning both boys and girls races while competing against Bremerton, Port Townsend and Forks.
Lauren Larson won the 5-kilometer run for the Port Angeles girls with a time of 19 minutes, 2.78 seconds, nearly 30 seconds faster than runner-up and teammate Kynzie DeLeon.
Rachel Matthes was third for the Redhawks (21:36.34).
Riders’ runners held down nine of the top-10 finishes in the girls race while competing against small teams from Forks, Port Townsend and Bremerton.
Rounding out the top-10 for Port Angeles were: Ella Holland (21:39.08), Kaylee Helgeson (22:10.91), Kathryn Guttormsen (22:24.25), Jenna McGoff (22:28.29), Emma Weaver (22:33.64), Jada Cargo-Acosta (22:45.78) and Alisandra Baccus (22:58.44).
The Spartans, Redhawks and Knights did not field enough girls runners to compile team points.
On the boys side, Port Townsend’s Nathan Cantrell (17:19.4) edged out the Riders’ Thomas Shaw (17:27.28) for the individual victory, but Port Angeles athletes claimed seven of the races’ top-10 finishes. The Riders cruised to a win with 20 team points, better than Bremerton (64), Port Townsend (76) and Forks (85).
Gabriel Long ran to third place for Port Angeles with a time of 17:48.11, while teammates Cameron Butler (17:53.65), Adam Borde (17:55.02) and Joshua Gavin (17.55.36) finished fourth through sixth, respectively.
Logan Tyson (18:23.19) and Lucas Gavin (18:32.86) were eighth and ninth for the Riders and Forks’ Wesley Camacho rounded out the top 10 (18:41.22).
Port Angeles will run against Kingston and North Mason in Belfair on Wednesday.
Port Townsend will compete in the Twilight Invitational Saturday at Cedarcrest Golf Course.
Forks will run Saturday at the Toutle Lake Invitational.
Sequim at Bainbridge
BAINBRIDGE — Sequim’s Murray Bingham finished second out of 171 boys runners at a combined Metro League/Olympic League race at Battle Point Park on Wednesday.
Bingham completed the 5-kilometer meet with a time of 16:49.5, behind Kingston’s Stefans Lusis (16:36.6).
The Wolves’ finished tied for fourth with Kingston (109 points) in the seven-team boys race.
Liam Byrne added a top-20 finish in 17th (17:57.6) and Alec Shingleton was 26th (18:38.2) for Sequim.
In the girls race, freshman Riley Pyeatt was fifth for the Wolves. She posted the second-fastest time for a freshman (20:01.5) and beat North Kitsap’s Madison Zosa (20:03.4).
Zosa won the Olympic League meet, the West Central District meet and was fifth at the 2A state meet as a freshman last year.
Sequim will run at the 23rd Curtis XC Invitational on Saturday.
Boys Tennis Sequim 5, Port Angeles 2
PORT ANGELES — The Wolves snapped the Roughriders’ five-match winning streak with a road win against their rivals on Wednesday.
“When you play against Sequim, you know they will be prepared and unfortunately, we came out a bit flat,” said Port Angeles coach Brian Gundersen.
Gundersen said one of the Riders’ bright spots was No. 1 singles player Hayden Woods’ straight-sets win over Sequim’s Blake Wiker. Wiker beat Woods 6-2, 6-1 in Sequim’s 4-3 victory earlier this month.
“Hayden was really on top of his game in all facets,” Gundersen said of Wednesday’s match.
Port Angeles (7-3) hosts Klahowya (7-3) on Monday.
Sequim (7-2) hosts Chimacum (1-9) on Monday.
