SEQUIM — After a long layoff due to other teams having COVID-19 issues, the Sequim girls soccer team took out their pent-up energy on North Mason, beating the Bulldogs 5-1 on Thursday behind the deadly combo of Taryn Johnson and Hannah Wagner.
Wagner scored a hat trick, getting two goals on corner kicks from Johnson, who picked up a pair of assists.
The Wolves had two games canceled last week because of other teams’ COVID-19 issues and hadn’t played since Sept. 21.
“The girls were motivated,” said coach Ken Garling. “They were happy to finally have a match.”
Wagner scored her first goal in the third minute on a header on a corner kick from Johnson. She got her second goal in the 58th minute, also on a Johnson corner.
“Those two are quite the combination,” Garling said. “Hannah has a way to find the open space on corner kicks.”
Wagner scored her third goal in the 26th minute on a solo effort. Jennyfer Gomez also had an unassisted goal in the 13th minute on a long-range drive from beyond the box.
Gomez later assisted on a Johnson goal in the 60th minute.
The Wolves nearly finished with a shutout, but North Mason was able to score in the 75th minute. Despite giving up the lone goal late, Garling said goalkeeper Addie Smith “had a really good game.”
Garling also said freshman defensive midfielder Ivy Barret “had a fantastic game” controlling the ball in the midfield.
