PREP ROUNDUP: PA, Sequim send 14 grapplers to Mat Classic; PA swimmers off to state

BLAINE — Port Angeles and Sequim combined to send 12 boys and two girls to the 2A state wrestling championships at the Mat Classic in the Tacoma Dome next weekend.

Port Angeles will send seven wrestlers who qualified at the District 1 2A Regionals on Saturday, while five Sequim boys qualified for state, including the Wolves’ Adrian Klarich, who won the 182-pound weight division at regionals.

Port Angeles finished fourth as a team at regionals while Sequim came in fifth.

Roughriders qualifying for state include — Cody Anderson, second, 120 pounds; Caleb Joslin, second, 152; Bryce Lauderback, second, 195; Ben Basden, third, 138; Hayden Wickham, third, 285; Bailey White, fourth, 220; Thomas Blevins, fourth, 170.

Joining Sequim’s Klarich at the Mat Classic will be:

Grant Pierson, second, 160; Austin Budd, second, 170; Dylan Perreira, fourth, 195; and Mason Larsen, fifth, 285 (alternate).

Port Angeles’ Blevins also won the region’s sportsmanship award.

Girls Region 2

FEDERAL WAY — Sequim’s Kiara Pierson finished second at 120 pounds and qualified for the girls Mat Classic. Pierson nearly won her weight division, losing just 1-0 to Brooklyn Bartelson of Puyallup, the No. 2 ranked girl in the state, said coach Bill Schropefer. This came after Pierson beat the No. 4 ranked girl in the state, Payton Stroud of White River, 3-2 in overtime.

Sequim’s Alma Mendoza took fifth at 155 pounds, which also qualifies her for state.

PA swimmers fifth at District

RENTON — The Port Angeles swim boys finished fifth at the West Central District Swim Meet, qualifying four swimmers for the state swim meet in three individual events and one relay event.

Qualifying for state was Cameron Butler, who finished second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 53.13 seconds and fourth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:08.92.

Tristin Butler qualified for state in the 500 freestyle, with a third-place finish in a time of 5:01.14 and a third-place finish in the 200 individual medley (2:03.73).

The Port Angeles 400 freestyle relay team of Milo Atwater, Karsten Hertzog, Cameron Butler and Tristin Butler also finished fourth with a time of 3:32.27, which also qualifies them for state.

Port Angeles tallied 128 team points at district. Kingston won the event with 234 points. Sequim came in 13th with 24 points and Crescent earned three points.

The state swim meet will be held Feb. 17-18 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

Sequim’s best showing was in the 400 freestyle. The team of Alex Berikoff, Liam Payne, Christian Doorich and Jax Thornton finished 10th.

200 freestyle relay: Sequim (Thaxton, Payne, Goodrich, Berikoff), 12th, 1:47.83.

100 backstroke: Jonas Kongerslev, PA, seventh, 1:02.23; A. Hertzog, PA, 10th, 1:05.25.

400 freestyle relay: PA (Atwater, K. Hertzog, C. Butler, T. Butler), fourth, 3:32.27; Sequim (Berikoff, Payne, Goodrich, Thaxton), 10th, 4:02.25.
