FORKS — Plagued by turnovers all season, the Forks girls basketball team took care of the basketball and had its most complete win of the year, 63-23 over Ilwaco in a Pacific 2B League opener Monday.
The Spartans had just nine turnovers for the game and allowed just 13 points after the first quarter.
“Our goal is 15 or less and we blew that away,” said coach David Hurn. “It’s all about opportunities and turnovers, and offensive rebounds dictate those opportunities.”
“I’m really proud at how they responded. That was tremendous work by the girls,” Hurn said.
The Spartans also had great balance, scoring between 14 to 17 points in each quarter and getting four girls in double figures.
Bailey Johnson, Chloe Gaydeski and eighth-grader Brooklyn Rondeau all led the Spartans with 14 points. Fynlie Peters scored 12.
Hurn said that Avery Dilley was a huge contributor beyond the scorebook. She finished with 14 rebounds, four blocked shots and, due mostly to her presence, the Spartans allowed just four points in the paint. Ilwaco has a post player, Nora Soule, who scored 26 last week in a game against Toutle Lake, but Dilley completely shut down Ilwaco’s inside game, Hurn said.
“For me, Avery really stood out,” he said.
Forks (1-0, 4-7) next plays at Raymond-South Bend at 7 p.m. today.

Neah Bay 53, Chief Leschi 14
NEAH BAY — The Neah Bay girls basketball team allowed only six baskets from the floor in a 53-14 win over Chief Leschi on Monday, improving the Red Devils’ record to 10-0.
It was the 27th straight victory for the two-time defending state champion.
Chief Leschi shot 6-for-40 (15 percent) against Neah Bay’s smothering defense.
The Red Devils led 39-7 at the half.
Neah Bay was led on the offensive end by Qwaapeys Greene, who scored 12. Angel Halttunen scored 10, Cerise Moss nine on three 3-pointers, Kandi McGimpsey seven, and Cerise Moss and Caylee Moss six each. Lillie Yallup led the team with eight rebounds.
Neah Bay next plays at Tulalip Heritage at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Boys Basketball Neah Bay 71, Chief Leschi 24
NEAH BAY — The Neah Bay boys basketball team improved to 7-1 on the season with a 71-24 win over Chief Leschi on Monday.
The Red Devils were led by Makyah Chambers, who scored 24 points on 11-for-13 shooting. Tyler Swan had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Thomas Sawyer had 13 points. Daniel Cumming had eight rebounds.
Neah Bay next hosts a good 9-1 Forks team at 7 p.m. Thursday. Forks’ lone loss was to Neah Bay early this season.

Girls Bowling Port Angeles 7, Bremerton 0
PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles girls bowling team blanked Bremerton 7-0 at Laurel Lanes on Monday afternoon.
“After a two-week break, Kenadie Ring, Lucy Townsend, Leilah Franich, Xoey Penn and Zoey Van Gordon came out strong and combined to record their best single-game score of the season, knocking down 724 pins,” said coach Rebecca Gundersen.
Another season high was established when the Roughriders earned a team Baker score of 158.
”With only four regular season games remaining, we are peaking at the right time,” Gundersen said.
Van Gordon led all bowlers with a two-game total of 335 (187, 148).
“What’s impressive is that up until this season, Zoey has bowled left handed. A wrist injury last spring forced her to learn to bowl right handed, and she’s impressively raised her average by 22 pins since last season to a 150,” Gundersen said.
Port Angeles (3-8) hosts league-leading Klahowya (8-0) at Laurel Lanes at 2:45 p.m. Thursday.
