SEQUIM — Milo Whitman doubled and scored on Brody Merrit’s eventual game winning double to left field to open a six-run eighth inning for Port Angeles as the Roughriders downed Sequim 10-4 in a Rainshadow Rumble rivalry contest that went to extra innings.
Port Angeles (9-1, 13-3) remains in sole possession of first place in the Olympic League 2A Division title chase with the win, a game ahead of North Kitsap (8-2, 10-4).
“This was a huge win for our guys,” Riders coach Karl Myers said. I’m so proud of the fight that they showed tonight. It’s been a busy couple weeks and I can’t say enough about the guys’ focus. Our theme has been one game at a time and they’re really buying into that.”
The Riders jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning, scoring runs when Ethan Flodstrom reached on an error and drove in Carson Jackson, an RBI single by Bo Bradow and the first of Whitman’s two RBI doubles.
“After the first inning [Sequim pitcher Ian] Miller really started highlighting his breaking ball and it gave us fits for a few innings,” Myers said. “Our hitters really adjusted their plan and started sitting on the off-speed stuff and put some good swings on the ball.
“Lots of hero’s in this one, none bigger than Milo Whitman,” Myers said. “He had two clutch doubles — one in the eighth inning to get us going against [Johnnie] Young and an earlier one to help us get on the board. I loved his approach at the plate today he was appropriately aggressive and was really tough with two strikes. “Brody also had a huge game for us with two doubles of his own driving in two runs including the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth.”
Colton McGuffey also had a solid day at the plate with three hits, including a double and Tyler Bowen went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs.
Port Angeles pounded out 18 hits in the win and held Sequim to six hits.
“Our pitchers battled all day long finding ways to compete against a scrappy Sequim lineup,” Myers said.
“Ethan kept us in the game for the first four innings and I was impressed with how he competed despite struggling with his command.
“Brady [Shimko] bridged the gap for the game working through the heart of their lineup and kept us in the game. Hayden [Woods] continued his strong campaign on the mound with a scoreless seventh and eighth with no hits and four strikeouts.”
Woods earned the win with those two quality innings.
Miller had an RBI triple for Sequim and Ryan Clark was 2 for 3 with a a double and two RBIs for the Wolves.
Port Angeles hosts North Mason today.
Sequim (2-7, 6-8) hosts Kingston (4-5, 7-6) today.

BREMERTON — The Roughriders edged the Knights by claiming three of four doubles matches in a road win Wednesday.
Port Angeles’ No. 3 doubles duo of Madison Saiz and Paulina Crawford were picked as players of the match by Riders’ coach Stephanie Gochnour after earning a 6-0, 6-1 victory.
