PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Port Angeles and Chimacum pick up first wins, Quilcene thumps Neah Bay and Forks shuts out Port Townsend

KINGSTON — It wasn’t the cleanest of wins, but Port Angeles picked up its first victory of the season in a 28-6 triumph over Kingston in the Olympic League opener for both squads.

The victory also was the first career win for Roughriders head coach Troy Mann.

“We have a lot to work on,” Mann said. “I’m glad the kids went out there and got the ‘W,’ but we have some improvements we need to focus on. They enjoyed it last night and I think they know what we need to work on going forward.”

The Roughriders forced seven Buccaneers turnovers on the night, including a fumble recovery and touchdown return by Garrett Edwards.

Brenden Roloson-Hines threw two touchdown passes, a 19-yard TD to Tyler Bowen and a 24-yarder to Garrett Edwards and also ran in another score from 6 yards out to power Port Angeles.

Roloson-Hines ran for 79 yards and completed 9 of 21 passes for 105 yards and the two TDs.

“He’s developing really well,” Mann said of his junior QB. “There are still have some areas we need to work on where he’s trying to force it and be a hero. Where he needs to realize we have another down, but I’ve given him that [freedom] because he has to learn to play quarterback.”

Edwards had 66 receiving yards and 33 rushing yards.

Derek Bowechop led the Riders with 8.5 tackles and also picked off a pass.

Bowen also intercepted a pass, Nolan Hughes added an interception and Chris Guttormsen recovered a fumble. Dominick Timperio also sprang into the Kingston backfield to steal a handoff.

“He got back there quickly and read the play really well,” Mann said.

Port Angeles was flagged for 125 yards on 14 penalties.

“All the boys are athletes, it was just sloppy,” Mann said. “And it’s hard to be excited when you get a sloppy win.

“If we play like that against Montesano [on Friday] it will be a long night, so we have to come together and fix these things we continuously seem to have. I love my boys, they give so much effort, and when they finally start to click it will be a beautiful sight.”

Port Angeles (1-0, 1-2) steps out of league play to host Class 1A powerhouse Montesano (3-0) at Civic Field on Friday.

Quilcene 48, Neah Bay 22

NEAH BAY — The Rangersserved notice that their 3-0 record this year is legit with an impressive road win over the Red Devils.

“Our kids are super excited,” said Quilcene coach Trey Beathard. “They feel like beating Neah Bay in anything is a huge accomplishment.”

Beathard said that despite coming into the game 2-0, he didn’t feel the Rangers had played that great in its first two games.

“Our level of play was much higher than it had been in our first two games. We played with more enthusiasm and intensity,” he said.

Olin Reynolds ran for 178 yards and four touchdowns, giving him 13 touchdowns already on the season and had over 300 yards rushing while storming out to a 42-8 lead halfway through the third quarter.

The game was relatively close until halfway through the second quarter.

Reynolds opened the scoring with a 43-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter. The Rangers’ Bishop Budneck added a 2-yard TD run to open up the second quarter, but the Red Devils came back, with Josey Tyree hitting Ramon Tinoco with a touchdown pass with 8 minutes left in the half. Jay Brunk took a pass from Tyree for the point-after to make it 12-8 Quilcene.

Beathard thought the Rangers started the game a bit slow.

“We seemed a little bit off. They [the Red Devils] were putting a lot of pressure on us and we had some drops,” he said.

From that point on, it was all Quilcene as the Rangers scored 30 straight points over 14 minutes to take command.

Reynolds had touchdown runs of 6, 23 and 26 yards, while Rangers’ quarterback Holdem Elkins hit Robert Comstock III with a 41-yard touchdown pass and Zach Budnek and Bishop Budnek each had TD runs.

Bishop Budneck finished the game with 12 carries for 85 yards and two touchdowns, while Zach Budnek had seven carries for 40 yards. Reynolds carried the ball 17 times and also had a 30-yard catch. Comstock had two catches for 61 yards, one of which Beathard called a “tremendous catch” in traffic.

Beathard said that in addition to the offensive stats, he thought Comstock and Sach Budnek had outstanding games defensively. Budneck had 3½ sacks, while Comstock two sacks.

Toby Croy had 102 yards rushing on 25 carries for the Red Devils. Jay Brunk had 78 yards receiving and Keith Johnson 71 yards receiving.

Quilcene (0-0, 3-0) will next play at Evergreen Lutheran (0-1) in a Sea-Tac 1B League game at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Neah Bay (1-2, 0-0) will host Lummi in a league game at 5 p.m. Friday.

Forks 45, Port Townsend 0

FORKS — Tristen Pisani and Caleb Peters rolled past the 100-yard mark on the ground for the third straight game as the Spartans ran past the Redhawks.

“Offensive line played well, everybody played pretty well,” Forks coach Emil West said. “We still some kinks in the armor to work out, but a really fun night to be a part of.”

West said he wanted to get every player on his roster some playing time.

“The goal was to get every player to play and we did that. Every kid got some experience last night,” he said.

West said Brett Moody also had a good night running the ball out of the Spartans’ wildcat formation.

“It was there for him all night,” West said.

“We definitely could have poured it on but we wanted to work on some things we haven’t used in a while.”

That, West said, included lining up for a field goal and kicking an extra point. Forks’ mentality is to go for two point conversions after scores, go for it in short-yardage situations and on fourth downs.

“The biggest cheers were when they lined up in the field goal formation,” West said.

“My mindset is to go for the win on every single play. And if I preach that to the kids, it’s not fair to them to not call the game the same way.”

Port Townsend (0-3) opens Nisqually/Olympic League play with a homecoming contest against Charles Wright (1-2) on Friday.

Forks (2-1) will make the long trek to Granite Falls (0-3) for a nonleague game Saturday.

Chimacum 30, La Conner 28

PORT TOWNSEND — The Cowboys controlled the line of scrimmage and ran up the middle on the Braves to their first win of the season and first victory for first-year head coach Chris Storm.

“It feels pretty good, a lot of hard work and effort went into it,” Storm said.

“We were moving the ball at will up the middle. Our offensive line was on fire all night and definitely playing their best so far.”

Storm said Logan Storm “probably ran for upwards of 200 yards” up the middle. Storm scored two touchdowns and two two-point conversions.

“If you see those numbers you know the offensive line is doing its job,” Storm said.

Cole Dotson added a score and Isaac Purser also had a TD.

“We were bigger than them up front, we have a bigger line,” Storm said. “We changed some stuff, we had some kids out hurt and had some younger kids step up and were blocking downfield.”

Storm said freshman Chris Fair filled in at center and did well.

“He’s a big kid, and that’s tough position to play as a freshman,” Storm said. “Chris is probably 100 pounds heavier than Nick [Kithcart], so he’s hard to push around. He made a huge difference on offense and closed the middle down defensively on a couple of plays with Jacob Williamson who is always solid up front.”

Storm also said Ben Preston ran the ball well.

“He’s new to the backfield this season and he had quite a few good runs,” Storm said. “He’s a big kid and hard to bring down around the end.”

Chimacum (1-2) opens Olympic League play at Klahowya on Friday.
