PREP FOOTBALL RECAP: Sequim and Neah Bay win big

SEQUIM — Sequim fans finally got a chance to watch their football squad at home this season, and the Wolves responded by firing on all cylinders for 3½ quarters in a 49-30 romp over visiting Elma.

The final score didn’t indicate how lopsided the game actually was. Sequim got up 49-14 halfway through the fourth quarter and allowed 16 late points after the game was beyond doubt.

The Wolves had great balance with 199 yards through the air and 173 on the ground. Quarterback Kaden Miller was almost perfect, throwing 11-for-12 (91.7 percent) with three touchdown passes and no interceptions.

Miller had a pair of 30-yard touchdown passes to Zeke Schmadeke on back-to-back drives in the second quarter. Liam Wiker also had a pair of touchdown runs of 7 and 14 yards. He also had a nice 41-yard catch and run on a screen pass up the middle. Andrew Keeler also had a 17-yard touchdown catch and added a 26-yard catch.

Wiker finished with 93 yards on 14 carries, while Schmadeke had 48 yards rushing on five carries and 61 yards receiving on three catches. Malachi Hampton had four catches for 51 yards and a 4-yard touchdown run.

Sequim (0-0, 3-0) goes back on the road for its first Olympic League game of the year, at Rainshadow Rumble rival Port Angeles (0-1, 1-2) at 7 p.m. Friday at Civic Field.

North Mason 48, Port Angeles 14

BELFAIR — Port Angeles struggled with North Mason’s size and strength and hurt itself with penalties in a 48-14 Olympic League football loss to the Bulldogs at Phil Pugh Stadium on Saturday.

The game was moved from Friday night due to hazardous air quality in Belfair caused by the nearby Bear Gulch fire.

The Roughriders (0-1, 1-2) couldn’t muster much offensively in the first half — a 30-yard catch-and-run from Carson Waddle to Jude Wallace one of the only real highlights of a first half that ended with Port Angeles trailing 28-0.

Cade Atencio’s tough running was much of the problem for the Riders. The 6-1, 205-pound senior rattled off touchdown runs of 11, 8 and 65-yards in the first half and took the first play of scrimmage of the second half to the house from 70 yards.

North Mason added a 42-yard TD reception to trigger the running clock with 9:52 left in the third quarter.

Port Angeles completed a 40-yard flea flicker from all-league offensive lineman Hunter Flores to Tucker Swain to set up a 14-yard touchdown connection from Waddle to Jude Wallace.

Waddle rolled to his left and found Wallace crossing the end zone to the left corner for the score with 3:51 left in the third quarter.

Dylan Mann added a 2-yard TD plunge after some tough running in the fourth quarter.

Friday’s game against Sequim doubles as homecoming for Port Angeles.

Kittitas 41, Forks 0

FORKS — The Forks Spartans have a week to heal and get some kids back with a bye next week, coming off a 41-0 loss to Kittitas on Friday night.

The Spartans have been depleted by injuries, with three of their better players out against Kittitas — Landen Olson and Bubba Hernandez-Stansbury are out for the year and Titus Rowley was out due to a concussion sustained last week against Port Angeles.

Kaden Ward led the team with 10 tackles. On offense, he rushed 12 times for 40 yards. Estevan Ramos had three kick returns for 81 yards and made nine tackles on defense.

Cash Barajas forced a fumble and Kade Highfield blocked a point-after kick.

The Spartans are hoping to get some of their injured players back in the next two weeks such as Kingston Steffen. Rowley will have to clear concussion protocol to be able to play again. Forks (0-3) next hosts Ilwaco (1-2) on Oct. 3.

Crescent 46, Clallam Bay 26

CLALLAM BAY — Crescent and Clallam Bay were locked in a tough battle going in to the fourth quarter, but the Loggers erupted for 20 unanswered points to remain unbeaten at 46-26.

Crescent coach Brian Shimko said what turned the game around for the Loggers was a 45-yard interception return for a touchdown by Mikah Love late in the third quarter as Clallam Bay had a 26-20 lead.

Love also ran six times for 102 yards and three touchdowns, including a 42-yarder in the fourth to help seal the game away. He caught six balls for 61 yards.

Liam Sprague ran 23 times for 192 yards and caught two passes for 14, while Loki Ellis and Conner Avrett each ran for 15 yards. Jax Sprague had a good game at quarterback, going 13-for-18 for 101 yards. Wyatt Bauer caught four passes for 23 yards. Eli Thompson had three quarterback sacks.

Crescent (3-0) will play two games this week. The Loggers host the Neah Bay JV at 4 p.m. today, then host Lake Quinault at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Neah Bay 46, Quilcene 6

QUILCENE — Neah Bay bounced back from a loss last week by beating Quilcene on the road 46-6, though a short-handed Rangers team kept it close until Tyler Swan blew the game open with a 99-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

The Red Devils were up just 8-6 at halftime, but erupted in the second half for 38 unanswered points.

The game turned when the Rangers made a great play on special teams, pinning the Red Devils on their own 1-yard line after a punt. Swan responded with his 99-yard burst.

The Red Devils scored on three straight possessions on their first play in that third quarter. Caleb Cummins had an interception that helped lead to a score.

The Rangers’ Oliver Hopkins had 40 yards rushing and a touchdown. He also passed for 155 yards, while intercepting two passes on defense.

Robert Evans had 61 yards of offense, while Logan Carstensen had a 35-yard reception and two quarterback sacks. Isaac Figueroa had 52 rushing yards and Dayton Bremsstrahlung had 35 receiving yards.

Quilcene (0-3) next plays at Charles Wright at 1 p.m. Saturday, while the Neah Bay JV plays Crescent today. The varsity (2-0, 2-1) has an open date next weekend the Red Devils are still hoping to fill. If not, Neah Bay next hosts Darrington on Oct. 3.

In another game this weekend, East Jefferson lost to a powerful Cascade Christian team 49-7 on Saturday.
