JOYCE — The Quilcene Rangers football team grabbed second place in the Northwest B League with a 50-6 win over Crescent this weekend.
Crescent is the No. 3 seed. Both teams move on to district playoff games next week. The league’s No. 1 seed is unbeaten Neah Bay.
Quilcene (4-1, 5-4) will have an interesting game against an 8-0 Lake Quinault team. Lake Quinault played six-man football this year, but the league champion in six-man is allowed to move up to the playoffs as an eight-man game. That game will be played Saturday in Port Townsend, tentatively set for 1 p.m.
Crescent (2-3, 6-6) will go on the road to play Muckleshoot (4-2, 5-4), likely on Saturday.
In the regular season finale, Quilcene’s James Miller gained 131 yards rushing on just four carries. He had touchdown runs of 60, 22 and 45 yards.
Deakon Budnek had seven carries for 143 yards for the Rangers and scored on 62-yard run. Dominic Smith had a 5-yard touchdown run and a 10-yard touchdown reception on a pass from Oliver Hopkins.
Smith also caused a fumble near the goal-line and Budnek recovered the ball in the end zone for a score.
For Crescent, Conner Bauers had a 12-yard touchdown reception on a pass from Henry Bourm.
Quilcene coach Trey Beathard said defense was key for the Rangers.
“Our front three [Maxx Budnek, Smith and Taylor Boling] put a whole lot of pressure on them. They really controlled the game,” Beathard said.
“There were lots of fumbles. They dominated the line of scrimmage,” said Crescent coach Brian Shimko.
The Rangers also had three interceptions, two by Andrew Perez and one by Robert Evans. Beathard said Kaden Faller and Dylan Boyer also got a chance to play at linebacker and did well.
For the Loggers, Conner Ferro-May led the team with 12 rushes for 38 yards. Conner Bauers had 29 yards rushing. Bourm threw for 61 yards, with Lukas Love had two catches for 46 yards.
“We want to be able to continue to play,” Beathard said.
