PREP BASKETBALL: Crescent boys, girls lose close ones to Chief Kitsap

POULSBO — Crescent battled but troubles getting the ball in the basket inside were a big reason why the Loggers fell 46-39 to No. 15 Chief Kitsap in a North Olympic League contest on Tuesday.

“Third game between the two teams and it was a very tough, physical dogfight with lots of good aggressive play on both sides,” Crescent coach Chris Ferrier said. “We battled CK hard but had some technical diffficulties, finishing at the rim was a problem and it bit us in the end.

Ferrier said a second-quarter slow down was especially difficult for his charges to overcome.

“We had a 4-minute dry spell where CK was able to put two baskets down and get away from us a little,” Ferrier said.

“But man, the fight we showed. it was fun to coach and hopefully fun for the kids to play.”

The Loggers (5-4, 10-9) have to wait for Neah Bay to play Chief Kitsap on Thursday to find out if they have made the postseason. A Red Devils loss and Crescent will host the District 1 No. 5 seed at 5 p.m. Saturday in a loser-out Class 1B Tri-District Tournament playoff game. A Neah Bay win and the Red Devils will play in that loser-out game Saturday at Crescent.

POULSBO — The Bears edged the Loggers by a single point for the second time this season in Tuesday’s North Olympic League game.

Crescent coach Kelly Serrianne called it “another edge of your seat, down to the final second game.”

Cydne Moore had eight points and 13 rebounds for the Loggers, while Chloe Conat added seven points and nine rebounds.

“Mackenzie Belford played tremendous defense,” Serrianne said. “We ask a lot out of her and she always meets and exceeds our expectations covering the middle zone. She’s also doing great things when she gets the ball. She’s starting to see what a great player she is, growing her confidence.”

Serriane said reserve Kiersten Jensen played the best game of her short high school career, scoring six points and forcing turnovers on defense.

“Freshmen Makiah Clark knocked down eight points, grabbed five rebounds and took two hard offensive charges late in the game which was huge with the Bears getting into foul trouble sending us to the line,” Serrianne said.

Free throws stung Crescent as the Loggers hit 12 of 24.

Crescent (0-8, 2-12) wraps its season Thursday at Clallam Bay.
