PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Lefties beat the Seattle Gumberoos 7-2 for the second straight game as their pitching staff allowed just one hit and no runs until the ninth inning.
The quartet of Francisco Lopez (Ottawa Univ.), Mason Seay (Univ. of Puget Sound), Kole Acker (Chaffey College) and Ryan Rodriguez allowed just one hit, walking six and striking out six. Josh Verkuilen (Cal State, San Bernardino), was touched up for a pair of runs, one them unearned, in the ninth, but he struck out two. Seay, who pitched three hitless innings and struck out three, was declared the winner.
At the plate, the Lefties had 12 hits to go along with the 14 they had Tuesday night against the Gumberoos. Chanz Doughty (Stony Brook) went 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Dom Dominguez (Cal State, San Bernardino) was 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored, while Jack Edmunds (Brown) had a double and two RBIs.
Jay O’Neill (Georgia Gwinnett) was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Jett Nelson (Jamestown) was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Over his past five league and nonleague games, O’Neill is batting .600 (12-for-20).
In his first game with the Lefties, another Ivy Leaguer along with Edmunds, Tyler Shulman (Harvard) went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and three walks.
The Lefties (4-7 overall, 2-7 West Coast League) wrapped up their series with the Gumberoos, a Pacific International League team, Thursday after press deadline. They travel to Wenatchee today to begin a three-game West Coast League series over the weekend against the Apple Sox (7-4).
