PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Lefties mounted a furious rally in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the hill was too big to climb in a 9-5 loss to Edmonton on Sunday.
Edmonton won two out of three games over the series with the Lefties winning Friday on a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth.
The Lefties went into the ninth inning Sunday down 9-2 to the Riverhawks, but loaded the bases with a single and two walks. Newcomer Ty Thomas (Cal State, Fullerton) drove in a run with a sac fly and then Danny Porras (Gig Harbor) hit a two-run double to make it 9-5. With two runners on and two out, Edmonton got the final out to end the game.
Thomas also hit a double, while WCL All-Star Tommy Markey (Fordham) went 2-for-4 to raise his batting average to .351. Porras finished with three RBIs.
Port Angeles (13-23 WCL overall, 2-7 second half) next hosts the DubSea Fish Sticks of the Pacific International League at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday. Wednesday is the West Coast League All-Star Game, which is being played in Bellingham.
Saturday’s Game
The Lefties got had plenty of hits and baserunners Saturday night, but stranded 12 runners on base in a 5-1 loss to the Riverhawks.
Port Angeles had 10 hits and five walks but could only push across one run in the third inning on an RBI single by Thomas.
On the mound, Lefties’ pitched allowed just six hits and just on hit over the final five innings, but the offense couldn’t take advantage.
Garrett Patterson (UC, San Diego) started and took the loss, allowing five hits and four earned runs over the first three innings.
Francisco Lopez (Ottawa) pitched three innings out of the bullpen, allowing no hits and striking out four. Josh Verkuilen (Cal State, San Bernardino) pitched the final two innings, allowing one hit.
Markey went 3-for-4 with a double and scored a run. Tyler Shulman (Harvard) was 2 for 4, while Porras was 3-for-4.

Friday’s Game
The Port Angeles Lefties won Friday in the most dramatic fashion, beating Edmonton 3-2 in 10 innings with a walk-off home run by Sam Matosich.
Matosich’s (Centralia College) home run was one of just three hits all game by the Lefties, but they got outstanding pitching from Garrett Holpuch (Tennessee Tech) and Mason Seay (University of Puget Sound) to keep them in the game.
Holpuch started, going seven innings and allowed seven hits, three walks and two earned runs while striking out nine. Seay went three innings, allowed just one hit, zero walks and struck out two. Seay collected the victory.
Dom Dominguez (Cal State San Bernardino) also had an RBI double. Jett Nelson (University of Jamestown) walked and scored a run.
Since giving up nine earned runs to Wenatchee on June 13, Holpuch has been outstanding for the Lefties. In his past five appearances, he has gone 30â…“ innings and allowed six earned runs for an ERA of 1.78.
