PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Lefties have been playing in a lot of slugfests this season, but on Tuesday night at Civic Field, the Lefties turned in one of their best pitching performances of the season in a 2-1 victory over Wenatchee.
The Lefties’ Seth Wrightstone (Vanguard) went 8⅔ innings, allowing four hits and one earned run. He walked four and struck out seven as he threw 149 pitches.
In a tight ninth inning and the Lefties up 2-0, Wrightstone got two outs, but gave up a single and a walk. James Rivera (Mississippi Valley State) came in and struggled, hitting two batters to make it 2-1. Brody Moore (Port Townsend) then came in with the bases loaded and got a fly ball out to end the game. Wrightstone got the win and Moore, a former All-Nisqually League pitcher for the East Jefferson Rivals, earned the save.
The Lefties got both of their runs in the sixth inning. Tommy Markey (Fordham) hit a single and came in to score on an Eddie Alfaro (Riverside CC) double. Alfaro came in to score on an error by the left fielder on a fly ball by Ty Thomas (Cal State Fullerton).
The Lefties (7-13 first half, 18-29 overall) played Wenatchee on Wednesday night after press deadline, then have a rare Thursday off today. They wrap up their home schedule with a three-game series against their cross-strait rival Victoria (14-5, 26-19) beginning at 6:35 p.m. Friday.
The HarbourCats are dominating the West Coast League’s North Division in the second half. The Lefties are technically still alive for postseason but their chances are pretty slim. They could finish as high as fifth in the second half and sixth overall if they go on a big winning streak to close out the season.
