VANCOUVER — Tommy Markey, who has been tearing the cover off the ball since mid-June, is the first Port Angeles Leftie to be named the West Coast League player of the week this season.
Markey, an outfielder from Fordham University in New York City, which plays in the Atlantic-10 Conference, has been a big part of the Lefties’ five-game winning streak.
Over his past five games against Cowlitz and Kelowna, Markey is 12-for-25 (.480) with six RBIs and seven runs scored. He hit his first home run of the season Sunday versus Kelowna. He has had multiple hits in four out of his past five games.
Markey, who is from Philadelphia, is one of two Fordham players on the Lefties’ roster. The other is Taylor Kirk. At Fordham this season, Markey hit .246 with three home runs and nine doubles.
Over that five-game stretch, Markey raised his batting average from .324 to .387, third in the West Coast League. His on-base percentage is .465 and his slugging percentage is .500 for a solid OPS of .965.
West Coast League Commissioner Rob Neyer announced the Baker Tilly WCL Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week on Monday.
The pitcher was Kelowna Falcons right-handed starter Gio De Graauw (Newman). For the season, De Graauw is 2-0 with a league-leading 0.38 ERA. He has fanned 25 in 24 innings while posting a 0.71 WHIP.
The Lefties are in Edmonton for a three-game series beginning today and return to Civic Field next Monday to face the Victoria HarbourCats.
