PORT ANGELES LEFTIES: Lefties fall in a tight contest to Kelowna

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Lefties had the tying run at second base, but they couldn’t bring him in the bottom of the seventh as the Kelowna Falcons completed a three-game sweep with a 7-6 win over the home team.

The Falcons won three against the Lefties by the scores of 7-6, 7-5 and 7-5. They broke a 6-6 tie in the top of the ninth inning with a pair of singles, a walk and a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Lefties’ Owen Allsup (West Texas A&M) got a two-out walk and then moved into scoring position at second base after a balk. But Ethan Young (Lafayette College) struck out to end the game.

The Lefties had 14 hits. Roberto Nunez (Embry-Riddle) was 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored to raise his average to .440 on the season.

Trent Jackson (Hawaii, Hilo) was 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI to raise his average to .327. Barrett Rose (Stephen F. Austin) had a bases-loaded double in the third inning for three RBIs. Allsup was 2-for-4 with a walk and run scored.

Saturday’s game

PORT ANGELES — Despite two home runs from Chase Taylor, the Port Angeles Lefties fell to the Kelowna Falcons 7-5 on Saturday.

Both of Taylor’s (Hawaii Pacific) home runs were solo shots. He has three home runs on the season.

Nunez had a hit and an RBI while Jackson had a hit and an RBI. Nunez is leading the West Coast League with 20 RBIs on the season.

The Lefties went into the bottom of the ninth down 7-2 but rallied with three runs. With two runners on base and two out, Kelowna was able to get a fly out to center field from Ethan Young (Lafayette) to end the game.

On the mound, Colby Scheuber (Grays Harbor) started his first game for the Lefties, going five innings and allowing three earned runs on nine hits and two walks. He struck out four. He took the loss.

Christopher Mazza (Long Island University) and Kyle Larsen (Pierce Community College) pitched well in relief, allowing one hit and one walk in three innings. Mazza struck out four in two innings of work.

The Lefties (7-14) have today off for a travel day, then begin a three-game series at the second-place Wenatchee AppleSox (14-4) at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday. The game can be viewed online on WCL Live.
