PENINSULA COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Men, women go combined 6-0 over weekend

PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College women’s basketball team dominated its home Pirates Classic tournament this weekend, while the Pirates men’s team got clutch free throws from Antonio Odum in a pair of wins and went on to sweep three games this weekend at an Edmonds College tournament.

The men and women went 6-0 on the weekend.

The women capped off an impressive weekend with an exclamation point, nearly scoring 100 points in a 94-70 win over Green River on Sunday. The Pirates also crushed Bellevue 67-42 on Saturday and Chemeteka 73-55 on Friday, outscoring their opponent by an average of 25.7 points a game.

Against Green River, the women shot 49.3 percent (37-for-75) and had an astounding 49-23 edge in rebounding, including 22 offensive rebounds to four for Green River.

The Pirates had seven players who scored at least eight points.

Alexa Mackey led the way with 18, while Neah Bay’s Ryana Moss, who was hot all weekend, hit five 3-pointers for the second straight day and finished with 17. In Saturday’s win, the Pirates were led by Moss, who scored 16 points. Moss hit four 3-pointers the same day as her sister Cerise Moss hit five 3-pointers in a Neah Bay victory a mile down the street against Port Angeles High School.

Ciera Tugade Agasiva and Mackey each scored 12 and each had four steals. Sequim’s Jelissa Julmist had 11 rebounds to go with five points. Smith came off the bench for 10 points and five rebounds.

In Friday’s win, the team had good balance with seven players scoring at least six points. The Pirates also outrebounded Chemeteka 50-31, blowing open a relatively close game with a dominating 21-4 third quarter.

Smith led the way, coming off the bench to score 15 to go along with 12 rebounds. Mackey had 10 points and six rebounds, while Julmist had eight points and eight rebounds. Makena Patrick had nine points, Shania Moananu eight points and Moss seven.

Peninsula (4-2) played Sunday afternoon against Green River in the finale of the Pirate Classic.

Peninsula men

The Pirates beat Blue Mountain on Sunday 68-63, rallying down the stretch after Blue Mountain went on a big run to take a late second-half lead.

It was a game of big runs. The Pirates held a led of 39-27 late in the first half, but Blue Mountain went on a 26-12 run over 14 minutes to take a 53-51 lead with 6:28 left.

The Pirates’ Jaidon Blackmon hit a 3-pointer and Xander Maestas (Port Angeles High School) hit three straight free throws to give Peninsula the lead. Akeem Sulaiman also had four straight points and Blackmon finished with seven points in the final 6:28 as the Pirates went on to a five-point victory.

The three-game winning streak evens Peninsula’s record at 4-4.

Sulaiman led the Pirates with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Blackmon finished with 11 points. Antonio Odum had seven points and nine rebounds, and Maestas and Cinco McNeal each had seven points.

The Pirates beat South Puget Sound 44-42 on Saturday and Grays Harbor 44-42. Both games came down to the final seconds.

Against South Puget Sound, the Pirates held the Clippers scoreless for the final two minutes, hanging on a 44-42 lead in the final 1:24 after Odum made a pair of free throws. Odum also had a steal in the final 30 seconds.

Isaiah Lopez hit four 3-pointers and led the Pirates with 14 points. Blackmon had 10 points and nine rebounds and Odum scored eight.

In the Grays Harbor win, the Pirates actually got up pretty big at 58-42 with just over five minutes left. The Chokers went on a huge 18-2 run to tie the game at 60-60 with 22 seconds left.

Again, it was Odum with the clutch shots from the charity stripe and he hit a couple of free throws with 3 seconds left to ice the game. The Chokers got off a 3-pointer shot at the buzzer but it didn’t fall.

Lopez again led the team with 17 points. Sulaiman had 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Odum had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Blackmon scored 11.

The men (4-4) host a three-game tournament, called the Peninsula Crossover, beginning Friday with a 7 p.m. game against Big Bend. The women (5-2) play at the Clark College Tournament beginning Friday against Centralia.
