PENINSULA ADVENTURE SPORTS: Spots open for GOAT Run, Big Hurt and other races

PORT ANGELES — Registration is filling up for fall endurance races put on by Peninsula Adventure Sports, but there are still some spots available.

The upcoming races include:

• The Great Olympic Adventure Trail (GOAT) Run, Sept. 6. This is a point-to-point 50K, marathon, and half-marathon trail running event on the Olympic Adventure Trail, with all three routes ending at Log Cabin Resort on Lake Crescent. The race is partnered with title sponsor North Olympic Healthcare Network. Wave 1 of the half-marathon is sold out, but there are still 30 spots left for Wave 2. There are still 20 spots left in the 50K and plenty left in the marathon.

• Big Hurt, Sept. 27. This multi-sport race includes mountain biking, kayaking, road cycling and running and can be done solo in the Iron Division or as a two- to four-person relay team. The title sponsor is Sound Bikes and Kayaks. Spots are limited and there are about 30 spots left for Iron Division and 30 for teams, and they are going fast. Also, racers should know they need to sign up by Sept. 1 to be guaranteed a T-shirt in their size — or one at all, depending on the number of late signups.

There also is a price increase for the Big Hurt registration Sept. 1

• Little Hurt, Sept. 28. The Little Hurt is a multi-sport race for youths in first through eighth grades, cycling, running and rowing on machines. Kindergartners and pre-K children can cycle and run, accompanied on foot by an adult parent or guardian.

The event will take place in partnership with Peninsula College on the school’s back campus and trails and with title sponsor Bike Garage. The cost is $15 for first through eighth grades and includes a T-shirt and a medal for finishers. The cost for pre-K and kindergarten is $5 and includes a finisher medal. Scholarships are available. If people have a financial need, they can email Peninsula Adventure Sports Director Lorrie Mittmann at lorrie@peninsulaadventuresports.com.

• Salt Creek 24, Oct. 25-26. The Salt Creek 24 is a 24-hour run/walk event at the Salt Creek Recreation Area, in partnership with Rain Bear Running Club and title sponsor Welly’s Real Fruit Ice Cream. People can participate solo or as part of a relay team and can optionally participate as a fundraiser for their charity of choice.

People can contact co-organizer Carmen Geyer at rain bearrunning@gmail.com to find out how they can raise funds.

There also is a “Last Runner Standing” event for the most intrepid athletes. It involves running to the summit of nearby 1,166-foot Striped Peak every hour on the hour until all but one runner drops out.

To find out more about each event and to get to the signup link, go to PeninsulaAdventureSports.com.

Race volunteers are still needed, as well. People can email Mittmann at lorrie@peninsulaadventuresports.com if they are interested in helping out.
