OUTDOORS: Larry Scott Trail run returns Oct. 15

PORT TOWNSEND — The fourth annual Larry Scott Trail Run returns Oct. 15 along the Port Townsend waterfront.

The event, which consists of 5K and 10K runs and a half-marathon, is put on by Run the Peninsula, which also runs the North Olympic Discovery Marathon in June and other local races around the Olympic Peninsula.

The event is made possible by title sponsors Peninsula Daily News and the Sequim Gazette, and presenting sponsors Jefferson Healthcare and Olympic Medical Center. Proceeds from the event go to several local organizations, including the Peninsula Trails Coalition, which builds and maintains the Olympic Discovery Trail.

About 400 people are expected to participate. There is still space available for runners. If people are interested, they can register at www.runthepeninsula.com. Registration ends at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 14. The cost is $40 for the 5K and 10K, $80 for the half-marathon and $35 for one of the virtual races. Runners receive wireless ear buds, a bib and medal.

If people are interested in volunteering, they can contact Run the Peninsula at rtp@runthepeninsula.com.

The race begins at 8:30 a.m. for the half-marathon and 9:30 a.m. for the other races at the ODT trailhead at the Port Townsend Boat Haven, with out-and-back courses for all three races. Half-marathon runners can begin picking up their bibs at 7:30 a.m. and other racers at 8:30 a.m. Parking is at Haines Place Park and Ride.

Jefferson County has given participants the right of way on local roads. Drivers should be prepared to stop at the following intersections from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.:

• Thomas Street and Olympic Discovery Trail.
