OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — Prescribed burns of woody debris piles are planned to begin Monday in the Sol Duc, Elwha, Hoh and Mora maintenance areas of Olympic National Park.
Smoke will be visible at times from nearby trails and roadways while the burns are in progress, park officials said in a press release, but smoke impacts are expected to be minimal.
Signage will be used to notify the public.
No area closures are anticipated at this time.
The Olympic Interagency Fire Management Program and park road crew have prepared for the prescribed burns of five woody debris piles in those areas.
“Road clearing operations in the park generate large amounts of debris and pile burning is the most convenient and cost-effective method of disposal,” park officials said in a press release.
The locations of the prescribed burns have experienced weeks of cool and cloudy weather with significant rainfall, so park officials have no fears of fires getting out of control, the release said.
