MOUNTAIN BIKING: Local riders win at Stevens Pass NW Cup

STEVENS PASS — Several Port Angeles mountain bikers placed in the fifth installment of the Northwest Cup held last weekend at Stevens Pass Ski Area.

Winning their categories were James Gardner of Port Angeles, who took first in the men’s Cat 2 30-39 division with a time of 3 minutes, 22.59 seconds and Mathew Mangano, who took first in the men’s Cat 2 15-19 division with a time of 3:10.59.

Also placing were Ron Riggs of Port Angeles, who came in third in the Cat 3 Men’s 40+ division with a time of 4:54.25 and Shannon Mangano, who came in fourth in the same division with a time of 5:01.99.

In the men’s 19-29 Cat 2 division, Zach Fraser of Port Angeles finished fifth with a time of 3:22.72, while Talon Northern finished fifth in the men’s 15-18 division with a time of 3:24.30.

In the boys’ 0-18 Cat 1 division, Ezra Northern was sixth with a time of of 2:35.17.

In the boys’ 11-14 Cat 3 division, Jack Clemens of Port Angeles came in seventh with a time of 5:02.73.

Cash Coleman, a veteran of the Lincoln Park BMX track, finished 11th with a time of 5:16.15.

Oscar Ruiz of Port Angeles finished eighth in the Men’s Cat 2 0-14 division with a time of 3:39.44. Harley Dachs finished 12th in that same division with a time of 3:48.07 and Colby Groves finished 18th with a time of 4:06.49. Anthony Jones finished 22nd with a time of 5:04.88.

Hudson Soelter of Port Angeles finished 23rd in the Men’s Cat 2 division with a time of 3:44.46.

The Northwest Cup is an eight-race series of downhill mountain bike races through the Pacific Northwest, with two races held at Dry Hill outside of Port Angeles earlier this summer. Stevens Pass was the fifth race of the season, with races upcomong at Donnelly, Idaho; Whitefish, Mont., and back at Stevens Pass. Donnelly is next on July 27-29.
